A Grand Jury in Botetourt County did NOT find cause to prosecute Sheriff
Reed Kelly on assault charges.
That decision followed a special state police investigation.
It began in October when Kelly received a letter from an inmate describing
in graphic detail how he was going to kill the sheriff, and his family.
The prisoner said Kelly attacked him after reading the letter.
Kelly accuses his opponents of playing dirty politics during election time.

Mac McCadden says he felt the pressure to run for re- election, but today he
announced he will NOT seek a second term on Roanoke City Council.
Elected to council four years ago, McCadden says he leaves with no regrets.
Though supporters encouraged him to run for re-election or some other
public office, McCadden says he intends to devote more time and attention to
his job as District Sales Manager for USAir.
McCadden says he may run for the General Assembly or some other office in

Jim Miller says it's not for lack of trying.
The two were scheduled to debate in Williamsburg Friday, but Miller says he
won't do it unless Warner commits to four additional debates.
He says Warner did not accept his invitation, so he in turn won't take part
in the debate on Friday.
But Miller says he still believes the two need to meet face to face.

A flurry of documents descended on the federal courthouse today- -in
anticipation of Christy Brzonkala's first public hearing in court tomorrow.
Virginia Tech wants her complaint thrown out.
While not denying that a tragic event may have taken place if Brzonkala was
raped by a couple of football players, as she claims... the University points
out Brzonkala waited seven months before filing a complaint. And yet she's
holding the University responsible for failing to file an incident report with
A lawyer for one of the athletes calls the alleged assault "a chance
encounter which Brzonkala initiated by going to their dorm room in the early
morning hours of September 22, 1994."
Brzonkala's lawyer wants the judge to postpone tomorrow's hearing, but
The man accused of murdering a Danville bartender more than five years ago
was found NOT guilty, less than an hour ago.
Attorneys maintained all along 42- year old Thomas Martin did not shoot and
kill Paul Nathaniel DeShazo.
The victim's burning car was discovered in September of 1990 by passersby
who also reported seeing a brown van nearby.
DeShazo's body was discovered nearby-- six days later.
The defense continued to present its case this morning.
One witness who was cross examined said the van she saw was "plain"-- not
detailed like the one that belonged to Martin.

As the city of Roanoke refines the plan for a new rental inspection
program, a coalition is rallying support.

Tonight, Joe Dashiell has more on the Leftwich- Tate Coalition.
Keith, the city is holding a community workshop Thursday night that will
bring together housing officials, neighborhood groups, landlords and tenants.
Members of the coalition hope those discussions will produce a program
that has an impact on the quality of rental property in the city.

Last night Tulsa received its invitation to the NCAA tournament by beating
Bradley in the Missouri Valley Conference tournament title game.
This game was in St. Louis, but a lot of area hoop fans were keeping an eye on
Roanoke native Steve Robinson - the former Fleming and Radford University star.
The first year Tulsa head coach let his main man Shea Seals, the tourney MVP
lead the Golden HUrricanes to their SUPER=33-Tulsa/=60/Bradley/=46;
first tourney title since 1986.
Tulsa beat Bradley 60-to-46. It is now 22 and 7 on the season.

The VCU Rams also earned a spot in the NCAAs by winning the Colonial
championship over UNC Wilmington.
Ivan "Ice Man" Chapell hit four free throws in the final 35 seconds to seal
VCU is going to the big show as the Colonial champs.
It's their first trip to the NCAA's since 1985.
The baseball Hall of fame veterans committee has selected four former stars
to enter the hall later this year.
Former Baltimore Orioles manager Earl Weaver, who managed the O's to 6 AL
East titles and the 1970 world series championship is joined in the Hall by
current Congressman Jim Bunning, who represents his home state of Kentucky.
Bunning is the only player to throw a no hitter in both leagues.
His selection is long overdue.

professional minor league hockey team. But now Macon has a new expansion
team that will begin playing in the Southern Hockey League next season.
The new owners say they'll use the old nickname which is the "Whoopee."
The team will be called the Macon Whoopee.
The work of a Franklin County artist- -a tribute to heroes and victims of
the Oklahoma City bombing- -reached its destination yesterday.

Ken Simpson's sculpture depicts a fireman holding the lifeless body of a
