One man is dead and another in custody today after a shooting in Halifax
County last night.
Authorities say an argument apparently led to the fatal shooting.
They say 33- year old Anthony Meadows was shot once in the upper chest with
what appeared to be a small caliber gun.
He died at the hospital.
Sheriff's deputies arrested 26- year old Barry Dwight Thomas, Junior of
He's been charged with first degree murder.
The shooting happened around 10- 30 at a mobile home East of Turbeville
A New York man was convicted this morning of attempted murder for
firebombing a New York subway.
Edward Leary admitted he placed bombs on trains in December of 1994, but
claimed he was taking prescription drugs that made him insane.
Prosecutors argued Leary knew what he was doing.
Three U-S. servicemen based in Japan have been convicted in the rape of a
12-year old Okinawan girl.
They'll serve sentences ranging from six-and-a-half to seven years in
a Japanese prison.
Relatives of the servicemen say the men are being used as scapegoats.

The flood watch has been cancelled for the New River Valley and far southwest
Virginia. In Highland County, the Winter Storm Warning is now a winter weather
advisory. That means 1 to three inches of snow is expected. It looks like most
of the precipitation will be out of our area by the time the really cold air
moves in later this evening. Temperatures will be dropping into the 30s by
late this afternoon.

The Roanoke Salvation Army Store got a donation they could have done without
A woman drove through a large glass window at the Salvation Army Thrift Shop
on Williamson Road shortly before 11 this morning.
The manager of the shop says the store will not close and that she hopes
business will pick up now that they have a drive-thru.
No one was hurt in the accident--but everyone was shocked.

A Senate Committee is holding a hearing today on the safety of air bags.
The hearing follows the deaths of at least eight children killed in
accidents in which air bags inflated.
Among those scheduled to testify: an administrator from the National
Highway Traffic Safety Administration and an official from the Association of
International Automobile Manufacturers.

state police investigation into possible missing county funds.
The board of supervisors suspended Mitchell Saturday after an auditor's

The board appointed Jimmy Alderman of Carroll County's computer operations
department as acting county administrator.
While Methodist choir members in Roanoke County were going through their
lyrics, a theif was going through their belongings.
Authorities say three United Methodist churches have been hit in the last
three weeks, apparently by the same person.
More than a half-dozen choir members at Bonsack United Methodist
Church were victimized Sunday.
As choir members sang during the morning service, someone entered the choir
room, rifled through purses and took a wallet from a man's jacket.
Two church members reported seeing a man leaving the building and getting
into a small white car.
The description matched that of a man seen at two other churches.
Teens in Martinsville are learning what it's like to be a part of law
The Martinsville police department has started a teen police academy.
Last night's lesson: learning to pay attention to details at a crime scene.
High- school students go through an eight week mini-version of basic
