A jury finds him not guilty of assisting in two suicides in 1993.
As Terry Phillips reports the question was whether Kevorkian intended to
kill or just relieve suffering.

Lucas says the girl did go to the river, then walked about five miles to the
home of her accomplice to hide out.

Two days later Lucas says she left but became so weary she again called her
accomplice for help.

A former Franklin County teacher has "resolved her differences" with school
The attorney for Lari Scruggs has gotten a judge to dismiss her complaint
against the school board, the principal and superintendent of schools.
Scruggs is the High School math teacher who was fired for offering a couple
of students her opinion of inter- racial dating.
She still has a claim pending against fellow teacher Nadine Keen and
community activist Linda White.
It was their public protest over the incident that attracted media attention
to the case, and Scruggs believes that's what cost her her job.

The unemployment figures for January look good for the state overall, but
not as good in our area.
The Virginia Employment Commission says in January the Commonwealth's
jobless rate was five-percent- slightly lower than a year ago and well below

State economist Bill Mezger says harsh weather caused an increase in the
unemployment rates around here.
Roanoke's was four-percent, up a bit from December.
Lynchburg came in at four-point nine percent, up more than one-percent from

Wythe County administrator Billy Branson wants a public apology from the
former chairman of the Board of Supervisors.
Mark Munsey allegedly organized an illegal board meeting where the board
discussed seeking Branson's resignation, but failed to record minutes.
Branson says if Munsey will publicly admit the meeting was illegal and
promise to conduct future official business in accordance with state law, he

says his 36 year marriage to wife Judy is near its end.
Allison told a Birmingham, Alabama newspaper tonight that he and his wife

About 112 people evacuated from the town of Weyauwega (wy-uh-WEE'-guh),
Wisconsin were allowed back into their homes briefly today.
They were on a rescue mission to save their pets.
Residents have been kept away since the Monday morning derailment of a
freight train carrying liquid propane.
Though the fire is burning, armored cars carried residents to their homes to
save the freezing and hungry pets they had to leave behind.
Authorities planned the rescue after the railroad said the fire could
continue to burn for another three weeks.
Heinz ketchup lovers weren't anticipating this one.
The company that prides itself on selling thick heavy ketchup is in trouble
for not putting enough of it in its bottles.
The government says the nation's leading ketchup maker isn't filling its
