LaDonna Blevins' failure to check on her two-and-a-half year- old son for
24 hours showed a reckless disregard for his life.
A Carroll County judge convicted Blevins of felony child neglect tonight.
By the time Blevins did look in on the boy, he had been dead in his bed for
Tracy Altizer reports.

(( LaDonna Blevins left for work at five p-m last August 26th, and went out
partying when her shift ended at midnight.
It was dawn the next morning by the time she went to bed.
Blevins says she and her live-in boyfriend Steven "Bones" Cole slept most of
the day, getting up twice to care for her infant daughter.
But it was after four p-m when she checked on two year-old Joshua, who was
lying dead in his bed with a fractured skull.
The medical examiner says Josh could've survived the injury if he'd gotten
medical treatment within a few hours.

Blevins testified she twice considered checking on Josh. But she says Cole,
who had babysat the children the night before, told her to let him sleep.
Cole told police he was high on drugs and shoved Josh while Blevins was at
work. He said Josh hit his head and he couldn't revive him, so he just put him
But on the witness stand, he testified it happened AFTER Blevins got home,
that he told her what happened and it was SHE who put Josh to bed.

SUBlevins faces one to five years in prison when she's sentenced in April.

They were neighbors who looked out for each other.
Today they're both dead- victims of a house fire in Lynchburg this morning.
74 year old Calvin Floyd and 83 year old Samuel Williams died when Williams'
home at 2-06 "F" Street caught fire just before nine.
Authorities say Floyd would check on Williams every morning, and may have
been trying to save his neighbor from the blaze when he died.

The bodies of both men were sent to Roanoke for autopsies.
Investigators don't know the cause but say there was a wood stove near the
front bedroom where the fire apparently started.
It's arson keeping Bedford County authorities busy.
Five separate fires were deliberately set in the Boonsboro- Big Island area
of Bedford County just yesterday.

Damage was contained to the storage area. That portion of the hotel was
closed to guests.
Carroll County has an opening for a new county administrator.
The board of supervisors fired administrator Billy Mitchell following a
special meeting Friday night.
The move came three days after the board asked state police to investigate
possible missing funds.
The board first placed Mitchell on administrative leave WITH pay on March
second, after auditors informed the board of discrepancies they uncovered
during the regular county audit.
General Motors workers are on strike in Ohio but the effect is felt much
wider than that.
The three thousand workers at the Dayton, Ohio plant have been on the
picket line for a week now.

The 16 year old charged with murdering a classmate is in police custody
tonight in Danville.
Authorities say Lawrence Donal (DON-ELL) Howerton, Junior turned himself in
early this morning.
He's charged with killing 16- year old Tony Spraggins.
Police say the teen was shot twice on Winslow Street, January 28th.
Witnesses say the two had been involved in a fight at school several days
Both were students at George Washington High School.

Senator John Warner and former Reagan Administration Budget Director Jim
Miller are vying for the G-O-P nomination.
The judge called it suspicious... but suspicion is not enough to convict.
State Police Agent John Richard Holt had been accused of speeding and
driving under the influence, but those charges have been dropped.
In September, he was pulled over by a Roanoke City police officer after
being clocked at sixty- eight miles an hour on Williamson Road.
A breathalizer revealed Holt's blood alcohol level was slightly lower than
the legal limit.
But the arresting officer testified that Holt-- who was off duty at the
time-- admitted to drinking earlier that evening.

The famous scene from Madonna's new movie Evita is now complete.
Much like the rest of Madonna's life, it was not without controversy.
President Carlos Manem at first refused Madonna access to the Government
House to shoot the scene- but then allowed the filming.
Madonna sang "Don't Cry for me Argentina" on the Government house balcony.
Argentinans criticized Madonna for the role- saying she is unsuitable to
play their adored Evita Perone.
