Lynchburg fire marshals say a wood stove is apparently to blame for a blaze
that killed two elderly men earlier this week.
83 year old Sam Williams and 72 year old Calvin Floyd died of smoke
inhalation when Williams' "F" Street home caught fire Monday.
Authorities say the fire started near the wood stove in Williams' bedroom.
A neighbor told investigators he saw Williams use gasoline to start the
stove last week.
Fire marshals aren't sure if that's what sparked Monday's blaze.
They say smoke detectors might have saved both men.
Fire officials determined the cause of an early morning house fire in
The roof had already caved in when fire fighters pulled up to a house in the
700-block of Arnette Boulevard around four this morning.
The home was being remodeled.
Painters apparently placed drop-cloths over the floor and a furnace grate
yesterday while working inside.
Officials say when the temperature dropped overnight, the heat turned on and
apparently ignited the cloth.

Still, some consumer advocates just hope the government doesn't fall back
on the "Just Cook It" strategy-- a motto which has failed to prevent millions

The third in a powerful new class of AIDS drugs now has F-D-A approval.
The agency cleared Merck's Indinavir in a record 42 days.
Indinavir is in the class of protease inhibitors, which block an enzyme
crucial to the virus's life cycle.
Studies show indinavir wiped most of the AIDS virus out of the blood cells
of at least 40 percent of patients treated.
Nobody yet knows if these patients will live longer.

Scientists have completed the first phase of the huge project to catalog
the human genes.
Scientists with the Human Genome Research project say the information has
already yielded promising leads on where to find genes affecting such disorders

The New River Valley Community Services Board is going high-tech to improve
access to psychiatric services.
The APPAL-LINK project allows a patient to consult with a doctor via two-
way interactive video.
The link will essentially provide an outpatient clinic of the Southwest
Virginia Mental Health Institute.
Patients will be able to continue treatment with the same doctor even after
they're released from the hospital.

One statistic shows that middle school students in the Roanoke Valley may
not be as physically fit as compared to others in the Commonwealth.
Across Virginia, 29- percent of all middle school students pass all four
spring physical fitness tests.

They were reported stolen in January, but now the famed muppets, Bert and
Ernie have been recovered.
Bert and Ernie were dropped off at a German radio station yesterday--45
days after being abducted from an exhibit.
Today Police proudly showed off the recovered pair.
The muppets from Sesame Street were returned through a middleman.
There is no word on a motive or identity of the thieves.
Bert and Ernie were unharmed and returned to the agency that organized the
tour of the 36-original muppets.
The puppets were handmade by the late Muppet creator Jim Henson, and were
valued at about 125-thousand dollars.
