Students at an elementary school in Franklin County were evacuated this
morning after lightning struck the school.
School officials say no one was injured by the incident at Dudley Elementary
School, but power and phone service were knocked out.
The students were taken to Burnt Chimney Elementary School.
The DUDLEY students will be dismissed two hours early today.
And lightning caused some scary moments for some airline passengers
traveling to Roanoke.
U- S- Air flight 3132 was flying from Washington's National Airport when it
was struck by lightening.
There were no injuries among the twelve passengers and three crew members...
just some rattled nerves.

Mechanics checked over the aircraft but there was apparantly nothing wrong
In fact, the plane has already taken off back to D- C.
A stubborn fire damaged a home in Salem this morning.
There were no injuries, but the blaze caused extensive damage to the home
at Mulberry and Hill Streets.
Neighbors say a family was preparing to move in this weekend.
Firefighters managed to rescue.
No word on the cause of the fire.
A five-year-old girl wounded in this week's attack on her kindergarten class
in Dunblane, Scotland has taken a turn for the worse.
She's now listed in critical condition.
It's a new blow for the town that's already mourning the deaths of 16
children and a teacher at the hands of a gunman.
Twelve other children were wounded.
Some of them received a visit today from British Prime Minister John Major.

More details are emerging about the gunman, Thomas Hamilton.
He had sent letters to news organizations, postmarked Tuesday, complaining
to Queen Elizabeth that the community had unjustly accused him of having a
fascination with young boys.
A 21-year old Tacoma, Washington, man has become the second U-S soldier
wounded by hostile fire in Bosnia.
NATO says Shawn Austin was shot in the shoulder early this morning after
confronting someone who was trying to break into an American base in Tuzla.
Austin and another soldier returned fire, but the intruder got away.
Austin is hospitilized in stable condition.
When The Roanoke Symphony takes the stage Monday night a new conductor will
be at the helm.
Yong-Yan Hu (Young- YHANG Who) is the final candidate to audition for the
job vacated by Victoria Bond.
Hu is currently the music director and conductor of the Duluth Superior
Symphony Orchestra in Minnesota.
He says educating young people will be one of his top priorities.

Hu is the fifth candidate to audition for this position.
He says the quality of the orchestra and community support are two reasons
he would like to come to Roanoke.
Hu will practice with the symphony all weekend and then perform with the
orchestra Monday night.
