((Witness interviewed on local radio said the fire started somewhere near the music booth of the disco where music was being played by a disc jockey. The electronic systems short circuited, the wires controlling the dico lights snapped.
At this point there was smoke and flames in and around the music booth and the lights went out. The people screamed and rushed to the door as flames engulfed the disco. The door through which the teenagers rushed was narrow, people trampled on the bodies of people who fell and couldn't get up. Others were crushed under a mezzanine which collapsed. Meanwhile bodies of the people who tried to flee the blazing dance hall were piled up near the narrow corridor and at the door through which people tried to flee.
Firemen were overwhelmed by the ordeal of taking charred bodies from the disco.
Young people who crowded the disco were celebrating the end of the school year. Many more took advantage of the Monday night 50 percent discount offered regularly by the disco management. People who live near the area said the dance hall was formerly a barber shop but converted and enlarged into a disco.
Police said it was the worst ever fire in the country. Gaby Tabunar, CBS News, Manila))
