The man who led police on a high- speed chase that ended in Roanoke a couple
of weeks ago will NOT be tried here after all.
Though city police cited Shawn Michael Love for reckless driving, failure to
stop for police and attempted malicious wounding... all that will be thrown
out- -in deference to much more serious charges in Central and Eastern
The city prosecutor said "all parties are in agreement" that Love will be
tried- -instead- -for robberies in Lynchburg and Amherst County and for murder
in Prince George County.
A six- month investigation of a Roanoke dog grooming business has failed to
turn up enough evidence to support criminal prosecution.
The death of a dog boarded over-night last September at Puppyland prompted
an investigation by city police, animal control and the State Department of
Though the dog had a couple of broken ribs and a punctured lung, the city
prosecutor said today there's no way to prove how the dog's injuries were
inflicted and who might have been responsible.

The owner of the business, Chris Benson, already has a 16-million dollar
libel lawsuit pending against W-S-L-S T-V over this case.
Hospital officials in Martinsville say there was no malicious intent when
the hospital conducted a security drill in January.
In a news release, they say they are saddened by the fact that employees
have decided to take legal action.
Early on January 25th, five masked gunmen entered the emergency room at
Memorial Hospital where they took nurses and other employees hostage.
It was a security drill, but now four nurses who say they were traumatized
have sworn out criminal warrants against the participants.
In the release, the hospital says the security force was trying to prepare
the staff for an emergency.
Officials say the hospital supports efforts to make the patient care
environment more secure.
Roanoke firefighters were feeling the heat this morning when they had to
battle two blazes within an hour of each other.
The cause of both fires appears to be electrical in nature.
The fire marshal's office adds that in both cases smoke detectors saved the
lives of the people who lived in the buildings.
The first fire started around four-o'clock on Rorer Avenue and left the
building a total loss.
The second one took place in a Memorial Avenue apartment complex.
One unit suffered major smoke and water damage.
No one was injured in either fire.
The story of a Baltimore woman believed to have been abducted along Route 29
has touched families across the country.
For some, Alicia Reynolds' disappearance has become a reminder of their own

Michael Knowles faced a judge today to ask for a court- appointed lawyer to
represent him on murder charges.
Police arrested the 47- year- old Christiansburg man yesterday morning at
the home of his estranged wife.
Police say Knowles broke into the residence and struggled with his wife and
18 year- old daughter.
43 year- old Angie Knowles sustained a fatal bullet wound, and the teenager
was shot in a finger.
The judge appointed Blacksburg lawyer Ray Hartley to represent Knowles, and
set Knowles' preliminary hearing in May.
Vinton Delegate Dick Cranwell and Roanoke Senator John Edwards are adding
their support to a 37- million dollar bond issue for Roanoke County schools.
The two lawmakers were part of a news conference at William Byrd Middle
School this morning.
They say the county's investment in education will dovetail with funding the
General Assembly approved this year.

The Cooperative Alleghany Bear Study started in 1994.
The goal is to collect data on black bears... specifically population growth

More than a hundred bears, including this sow, have been given a collar with
a tiny transmitter inside.
That allows them to be tracked and monitored.
Once the den is located, the bear is tranquilized.
Then the data is compiled.
Even without being tranquilized, the sow would have no problem being outside
of the den.
But the cubs could die if they're over- exposed to cold weather.

They estimate these cubs are six to seven weeks old and they're asking us to
keep them in our jackets to keep them warm.

Once the statistics are taken, the sow is placed back into the den... only
to be monitored again next year.

The hotel reopened last year after an extensive renovation and the addition
of a conference center.
The project cost upwards of 40-million-dollars.
It required an extensive planning and fund-raising effort by the city of

in its success.
Today the Jefferson Center Foundation dedicated a hall to retired Judge
Fitzpatrick has worked on the center project for 11 years.

How the Express does in it's final two games of the regular season;
determines if Charlotte or Richmond will be Roanoke's first round opponent in
the ECHL playoffs.
The post season schedule was released yesterday and the Express WILL NOT
have a home play off game at all next week.
Their first home post season appearance on the ice will be on Tuesday April
2nd at 7pm against either Richmond or Charlotte.
