fired the fatal shots.

after six p-m... when a woman dialed 9-1-1 and said she was being beaten.
By the time officers arrived, Billie Patton had run next door and dialed
9-1-1 a second time.
Plunkett's fiancee acknowledges he had been drinking and did pick up the
rifle from behind the door, but she says he never pointed the weapon toward the
officers.

State police say a pedestrian was struck and killed in Franklin County last
night.
They say 32-year-old Russell Lanier Bowers of Martinsville was standing on
Route 890 when he was hit by a vehicle driven by Noel Lee Reed.
Bowers later died at the hospital.

At least four deaths are reported in two separate accidents on highways

Forecasters expect the snow to move into the upper Midwest this morning.

Astronaut Shannon Lucid is getting used to her home away from home some 245
miles above Earth.

Lucid will spend the next five months aboard the Russian Space station Mir.
Six more U-S astronauts will follow suit over the next two years,
permanently staffing Mir through May 19-98.
Today astronauts and cosmonauts are busy transferring supplies and

Tomorrow astronauts Linda Godwin and Rich Clifford leave shuttle Atlantis
for a six-hour space walk.
It will be the first American space walk outside Mir as the two attach
experiments to the outside of the space station.

They say 32-year-old Russell Lanier Bowers of Martinsville was standing on
Route 890 when he was hit by a vehicle driven by Noel Lee Reed.
Bowers later died at the hospital.

Meningitis has infected three University of Virginia students this school
year.
The school's director of student health believes the bacteria could have
been spread while students were out for a drink.
Doctor James Turner says two of the three students infected consumed alcohol
prior to becoming sick.

Gates is giving his career a fresh look.
He and his wife Nina Kent, who's also a make up artist, moved to Russell
County and started a film company.
They say they'll start their first production, a psychological thriller
called "For Better or Worse" this summer.
Gates is hoping to turn his childhood interest in film making into another
award winning venture.
