In Britain today a panel of scientists is expected to rule on what to do about so-called mad cow disease.
A possible link between the disease and a rare but fatal human brain ailment has driven beef from Britain's menu.
Yesterday the British McDonald's chain announced that it was switching to foreign beef for its hamburgers.
Cinny Kennard has the story -- we warn you that some of this video may be disturbing.

That's the way another major british burger chain feels. it stopped selling hamburgers this morning. since the government announced "mad cow disease", might be linked to a rare and deadly brain illness in people who may have eaten tainted beef, dozens of countries have said they will no longer buy british beef. domestic sales have plummeted and parents are now waiting for an answer from the government. what can they feed the children?
MICHELE ELLIOTT KIDSCAPE:WHAT WE ARE SAYING TO OUT CHILDREN IS NO HAMBURGERS BUT THEY HAVE BEEN EATING THEM FOR YEARS AND YEARS, WE HAVE THIS WORRY WE HAVE BEEN KILLING OUR CHILDREN.
Many feel the nations 11 million cattle must be slaughtered immediately. others suggest eradicating just the older cows, because there were very few cases of the disease confirmed in the younger ones.
The farmers await the government verdict.
we don't know where we are going or what we are doing, the sooner the government comes up with some policy the sooner they clear the matter up the better. its an extremely worrying job both emotionally and financially.
It is expected more countries will endorse the widespread bans today and there is talk a multimillion government bailout may be needed. the great fear is it may be too late to save the industry? cinny kennard, cbs news london .))

In New York, a young girl's life is in danger as doctors refuse critical surgery until someone can pay the bill.
Doctors say the seven-year-old suffers from a tumor in her spine, and could die within weeks if it is not removed.
But they say the procedure is too costly to perform without some kind of financial compensation.
The girl and her father came to the country from their native Bolivia, where doctors there had mis-diagnosed her cancer as something less servere.
Ironically, medical experts say if the girl had entered the country illegally, she would be eligible for Medicaid.
The family is now asking for help from the Bolivian Consulate in New York.
