Scientists this morning unleashed a man-made flood in the Grand Canyon, hoping it encourages new life.

The week long experiment will release more than 117 BILLION gallons of water into the canyon.
Scientists hope the flood will stir nutrient-rich sediment below the dam and redistribute it through the canyon.
The goal is to create hundreds of new beaches where plant life can thrive and become food for fish and animals.

There's good news about the wife of evangelist Billy Graham.
Doctors at Memorial Mission Hospital in Asheville, North Carolina today upgraded Ruth Bell Graham's condition from fair to good.
Mrs. Graham has been in the hospital for more than three weeks following surgery for bacterial meningitis.
Hospital officials say Mrs. Graham is eating solid food and is up and walking.

Nicolas Cage's performance as an alcohonic bent on drinking himself to death in the movie LEAVING LAS VEGAS earned him a best actor statue.
Moving from the Las Vegas strip to Death Row...Susan Sarandon won a best actress statue her portrayal of a real-life nun who works with hardened criminals.
First time nominee Kevin Spacey took home the oscar for best supporting actor in the film the usual suspects.. AND .revealed what it was like to hear his name called.
Another first time nominee Mira Sorvio won for her depiction of a hooker in Woody Allen's Mighty Aprhodite. Apollo 13 won two awards, and director Ron Howard who was not nominated told us who he secretly wanted to win.
Even with the glitz, the high fashion and the snazzy production numbers,...the most stirring moment of the evening was provided by Christopher Reeve.
The surprise appearance by the paralyzed actor and his call for more socially responislbe movies...touched off a standing ovation.

Meantime, Astronaut Shannon Lucid brushed off a sexist Russian comment. Lucid says she's not bothered by a Russian space official's remark that as a woman she'll be able to help with the cleaning aboard Russia's space station.

Lynchburg firefighters are mopping up at the scene of a fire that heavily damaged a home this morning.

The blaze at 5-16 Stuart Street was reported at about 10:30.
Fire crews arrived to find smoke and flames coming from the left side of the building.
Authorities believe the fire started in the basement of the single- story structure and burned its way through the kitchen floor.
No one was home when the fire broke out.
The Lynchburg fire marshal is investigating.

The new office will open in April, and the bank says more will be on the way.

Blacksburg police have confirmed an altercation outside a town night spot last week led to charges against Virginia Tech football standout George Delricco.
The senior was arrested early Thursday morning on assault and battery charges.
Police say the linebacker confronted four other students, and the exchange of words turned physical.
Shawn Elko and Jesse Phillips, two of the students involved, allegedly suffered facial fractures.
