Southern California deputies have been videotaped clubbing two people at the
end of a long freeway chase.
The deputies had been pursuing a pickup packed with suspected illegal
immigrants for about 70 miles east of Los Angeles.
T-V news helicopters showed the deputies taking numerous baton swings at
two people beside the vehicle.
There's been an immediate call for a Justice Department investigation from
the A-C-L-U and the Riverside County deputies have been placed on paid
administrative leave.

After a 45- minute chase, the two suspects wrecked the stolen car on Route
2-21 and fled into nearby woods.
A police tracking dog helped locate the alleged driver, 20-year-old Lewis
Arthur Carroll of Forest, about an hour later.
He's charged with possession of a controlled substance, grand larceny,
driving with a suspended license, failure to stop for a police officer and
reckless driving.
The other suspect remains at large.

In Franklin County, authorities report a late night single vehicle accident.
Authorities say 22-year-old Eric Lee Baker of Woodstock was killed -- two
of his passengers were injured.
The accident happened just before 11 on Route 40 West between Rocky Mount
and Ferrum.
Police say Baker was traveling west when he swerved to avoid something
crossing the road, and ran off the road and struck a tree.

with their sixth national championship, the first since 19-78.

Last summer residents of Pembroke, in Giles County, hooked up to a brand
new, and badly needed sewer system.
What they didn't bargain for, however, was the increase in their monthly
bills.
Last night, town council could offer no immediate relief.

Town manager Randy Lemmon says the problem is that the health department
also forced the town to make WATER improvements. It had to start paying that
loan at the same time the sewer system went on line.
So customers are also paying more for water, even though only part of the
system was upgraded and some people still have the same old problems.

received some serious scrutiny at a public meeting last night.

37- point- four million dollar bond issue.

county, but the bulk of the money, more than 33 million, is earmarked for
construction of a new south county high school.
Supporters say the project is needed to ease overcrowding, and replace

the site, and the fairness of a bond issue that benefits one section of the
county more than another.

Kentucky fans are jubilant today now that their Wildcats have won college
basketball's national championship.
