Hope has faded for Commerce Secretary Ron Brown and 32 others aboard an Air
Force Jet that crashed today.
One woman did survive the actual crash but then died on the way to the
As Byron Harlan reports the plane veered off course and crashed into a
mountain near (Do-Brahv-nik) Dubrovnik, Croatia.

That was CBS' Byron Harlan.
Ron Brown died far from home in the military version of a Boeing 737
which--as a civilian plane-- experienced two unexplained crashes recently.
But the jet Brown was in had no so-called black box adding difficulty to what
will already be a tough investigation.
Patrick Brunson of Floyd County today lost his two-million dollar lawsuit
against Spine Surgeon, Dr. Eric Korsh.
Brunson claimed Korsh performed unnecessary fusion surgery on his back--
all for his own financial gain.
The jury apparently, did not agree.

Patrick Brunson's case against Korsh centered around his claims that the
doctor, then with Lewis Gale Clinic's Virginia Spine Center-- told him he had
to have bone fusion surgery using pedicel screws-- or he'd be paralyzed.
With the surgery, though-- he'd be pain-free.
Dr. Korsh denies making any such promises.

And there are other cases-- former patients of the doctor's who claim he
made the same guarantees to them.
The jury wasn't made aware of the allegations, or the other lawsuits-- and
Brunson's attorney says he doubts this case will have much impact on future

Both sides speculate that the relationship between Brunson and Korsh may
have had some impact on the jury.
The two were friends, until a horse venture went under-- Korsh eventually
dropped a lawsuit against Brunson to recoup money-- before this suit was filed.
There was also this video that the defense hired a private investigator to
make-- in it, Brunson is seen working on his Copper Hill horse farm-- doing
just what he'd been saying he could no longer do.

A major break in the Unabomber case.
Federal agents raided a small Montana town today-
They've taken a former University professor into custody.
The F-B-I searched the home of 53 year old Ted Kazinksy- but so far they
have not charged him with anything.
The suspect was apparently turned in by members of his own family in
Chicago after they found writings that made them suspicious.
The Unabomber's struck several targets over the years- killing three people
and injuring 15 others since 1978.
Firefighters are still on the scene of a fire that heavily damaged a home in
The blaze at 8-10 Wise Street was reported just after nine.
The first crews arrived to find heavy smoke and flames coming from the back
of the two-story structure.
It took them more than an hour to bring the fire under control, and
authorities say they did well just to save the building.

The residents of the home escaped the blaze, but one child suffered smoke
The fire marshal's office is investigating the cause.
A fatal backhoe accident in Christiansburg today.
Now the Occupational Safety and Health Administration is investigating.
Three men were repairing the vehicle at an industrial machine repair shop on
The backhoe rolled and crushed one of the men to death.
No one else was injured. Police have not yet released the name of the

A man arrested after a fight with his girlfriend is suing the city of
Roanoke and two of its police officers.
Lennord Davidson alleges the officers used excessive force when they
apprehended him in April 1994.
The suit says Davidson was hospitalized for 21 days for treatment of the
injuries he sustained at the hands of the police officers.
He's seeking more than 10 million dollars in damages.

Roanoke's city attorney says there's absolutely no evidence of excessive
force in this case, adding he's confident a judge or jury will vindicate the
city and its officers.

The Bedford County Sheriff's Department hopes to make a splash at Smith
Mountain Lake this summer.
A 22 foot patrol boat is the latest crime- fighting unit in the county.
Officials say expect to see the boat frequently on the lake.
They say their main goal is to crack down on alcohol and drug use, but there
are other reasons they're using the boat.

Training for the patrols takes place next month.
Sheriff Brown hopes the boat will officially set sail in early June.

It appears the deputies shown beating Mexicans on tape- have had their
actions on the job questioned before.
The Los Angeles Times reports Tracy Watson last year shot and seriously
wounded a suspected car thief.
Prosecutors determined the action was justified.
The paper also reports Kurt Franklin had a reputation for quote roughing up

The deputies are suspended with pay- while the Hispanic community is calling
for their arrest.
Changes will take place at the intersection where two Danville children
were killed last fall.
But family members who met with state transportation officials in Lynchburg
today say the proposed changes aren't enough.

(( Raymond Mustain and his in- laws may be best remembered for blocking
traffic at the intersection of Elizabeth Street and Route 265.
Family members were arrested but didn't seem to mind.
They'd succeeded in drawing attention to what they view as a death trap.
Mustain's stepchildren, 12- year old Jami and 10- year old James Earles were
killed there in a traffic accident last October.
The Mustain's work over the past six month has had an impact.
State transportation officials say the cross over will be closed.
But family members view it as a quick fix. They want an overpass.

As the standoff with the Freemen in Montana drags on, the FBI has its eye on
militia movement members around the country -- including in Virginia.
A spokesman for the Virginia Citizen's Militia says federal agents met with
him on Monday in Richmond.

Roanoke County officials are looking for "the next best plan," following
defeat of the 37- million dollar bond issue for schools.
And superintendent Deanna Gordon says the school board and the supervisors
will be taking a fresh look at their alternatives.

Voters rejected the bond issue by a wide margin, putting the brakes on a
33- million dollar plan to build a new south county high school.
Opponent Don Terp says he hopes the vote will open a new dialogue on the
county's school construction needs.

The Roanoke Maroons topped the Lynchburg Hornets 15-6 yesterday in a
crucial ODAC lacrosse contest.

Lynchburg coach and former Roanoke All-American Brett Smith was reunited
with his former coach, Roanoke's Bill Pilat.
The reunion went sour though as the maroons got 7 points from super soph
