Pulaski County authorities say they'll have to rely on an autopsy to
identify the victim of an early morning fire.
The blaze broke out in a small trailer in the Parrott area around two-
Firefighters recovered the body in the living room.
One person lived in the trailer, but the victim was burned beyond
The occupant of the trailer used lanterns for light and a kerosene heater,
but officials have not yet determined how the fire started.
The investigation into missing funds at the Pulaski County jail is now
focusing on two employees.
But the Commonwealth's Attorney has determined there isn't enough evidence
yet to file charges.
An audit revealed five thousand dollars was missing from an inmate work

State officials say changes are in store for the intersection where two

(( Raymond Mustain and his in- laws may be best remembered for blocking
traffic at the intersection of Elizabeth Street and Route 265.
Family members were arrested but didn't seem to mind.
They'd succeeded in drawing attention to what they view as a death trap.
Mustain's stepchildren, 12- year old Jami and 10- year old James Earles were
killed there in a traffic accident last October.
The Mustain's work over the past six month has had an impact.
State transportation officials say the cross over will be closed.
But family members view it as a quick fix. They want an overpass.

A Roanoke woman is blaming her landlord for the house fire that killed her
four children and mother.
In a lawsuit filed yesterday in Roanoke Circuit Court, Patricia Leftwich
says her landlord's negligence made the house a firetrap.
She says the rental property on Stewart Avenue was dangerous because it had
faulty wiring and did NOT have a fire wall.
Leftwich is suing Rupert Jack Richards, Senior, and WTS of Virginia, for
more than 1-point-3 million dollars.

defeat of the 37- million dollar bond issue for schools.
County voters rejected the proposal by a wide margin yesterday.

Jean, school officials and the supervisors are looking for what
superintendent deanna gordon describes as "the next best plan."

Meanwhile, Supervisors Chairman Bob Johnson says he understands the word

If the voters were telling the county to live within its means, he says he
heard the message loud and clear.
A backhoe crushed a man to death in Christiansburg today.
It happened around four at an industrial machine repair shop on Roanoke
Three men were repairing the backhoe when it started to roll.
The victim's name has not been released. No one else was hurt.
A man pleaded guilty in Roanoke Circuit Court today to killing his estranged
34 year old Vickie Ross was found in the back seat of her car last December.
She had been shot in the back of the head.
Today 36 year old Bryant Ross pleaded guilty to first degree murder and
illegal use of a firearm.
Ross had earlier told a detective he dragged Vickie's body out to her car--
got rid of the gun-- and abandoned the vehicle.
He'll be sentenced in May.

The last surviving member of the largest Death Row escape in the nation's
history has suffered another legal setback.
Lem Tuggle has faced the death penalty for 13 years for the rape and murder
of Jessie Geneva Havens in Smyth County.
During trial Tuggle was denied a state subsidized psychiatrist to fight
claims of his "future dangerousness."
A three judge panel of the federal appeals court in Richmond said today that
denial did NOT have a substantial impact on the Smyth County jury's death
Tuggle's attorney says he will appeal that finding.
A spokesman for the Virginia Citizen's Militia says the FBI met with him on

Jeffreys says Virginia militia members are trying to help get the Freemen
They believe some federal government agencies have overstepped their bounds.
But Jeffreys says the Freemen position on some financial matters is NOT
shared by supporters in Virginia.
Some of the Freemen are facing bank, financial, and mail fraud charges.
Governor George Allen today hailed the bi-partisan cooperation that led to
reforming Virginia's B-POL (bee-pole) tax on businesses.
The tax had been criticized as a small business killer.
The Governor also put his signature on two bills that may help restrict
children's access to tobacco.
One bill requires a photo I-D for tobacco purchases.
The other requires cigarette vending machines be monitored by the owners of
the businesses where they're located.

On Wall Street a late afternoon surge pushed the Dow to a record close--up
18 points, finishing at 56 hundred 89.
NASDAQ gained four and a half points.
