The craft went down near the intersection of 641 and route 11 in an open
field just outside of Troutville.

U-S officials now say 35 people died in the plane crash that killed
Commerce Secretary Ron Brown.
The bodies of a Bosnian and Croat have been added to the death toll-
The task of recovering and identifying bodies is underway, although a White
House Spokesman says Ron Brown's body has been identified.
The other major task- figuring out why the plane veered off course-

So far there is no sign of an explosion.
There is no so-called black box on the military version of the Boeing 737 so
investigators will have to piece together any evidence they can find.
Federal Agents have arrested the suspected Unabomber.
53 year old Theodore Kaczynski is charged with possessing bomb components-
but not with any actual bombings.
Federal agents searching his cabin say they found a partial pipe bomb,
diagrams and chemicals.
But the Attorney General says more work must be done.

Officials say the search of Kaczynski's cabin could take several days.
So far chemicals that could be used in bombs and two manual typewriters
have been found.
The Unabomber sent many typed messages over the past years.
Investigators want to see if the imprints match up.
Former Los Angeles Mayor Tom Bradley suffered a stroke.
It happened one day after Bradley underwent heart surgery.
The 78 year old suffered a heart attack last month- and had surgery
Doctors tonight say Bradley can not move the right side of his body.
Bradley was the city's first black mayor.
He's in fair condition at an L-A hospital.

Fire damaged a home in the Green Hill Section of Roanoke County today.
Firefighters were called to Lily Drive around 3:45 this afternoon.
Several rooms were gutted as the flames burned through the roof.
One firefighter was knocked down by falling debris, but he did not suffer
any serious injuries.
No one else was hurt.
Damage to the home was extensive.
There is no word yet on the cause of the fire.
In Lynchburg fire destroyed an unoccupied trailer this afternoon.
Firefighters were called to this mobile home park on Camp Avenue around
Authorities say 50-foot flames were shooting from the trailer when they
The trailer was gutted... no one was home when the blaze broke out.
Meanwhile investigators are still trying to figure out what caused a blaze
that heavily damaged another Lynchburg home last night.
The blaze at 8-10 Wise Street began in the back of the building, but
authorities don't know how it started.

The college that's scheduled to close its doors in Buena Vista in just six
weeks could re-open with twice the financial impact on the community.
That's according to a source close to the college-- if a Mormon group
that's eyeing the Southern Virginia College signs a deal in the next six weeks.
The investors say they are NOT acting on behalf of the Church of Jesus
Christ of the Latter Day Saints.

Even so, its members tell College officials they'd like to convert the

Jail overcrowding is a serious problem in Martinsville.
The current jail was built to house 18 inmates but today holds an average of

Today city council got a close look at two proposals for a new jail.
One calls for a 90 bed facility.
But Sheriff Steve Draper says even that's just not enough room.
He says the area needs a jail twice that size.

Now, a panel of experts says virtually all the deaths can be prevented by
routine Pap smears and by safe sex.
The National Institutes of Health found that about half of the women
diagnosed with cervical cancer in the United States have never had a Pap test.
Properly performed, the test can detect abnormal cells before they become

reported for her 20- minute appointment in the parking lot of a Fairlawn

The mobile unit is a joint effort between the New River and Mount Rogers
Health Districts and several hospitals.
They're trying to improve mammography access in Southwest Virginia, where a
1993 survey showed less than 25 percent of women undergo reccommended

Appointments may be made through local health departments, the unit visits
each county in the service region about once a month.
It also travels to industries which arrange on- site screenings to assist in
early detection and prevent lost productivity.
The American Cancer Society recommends screenings at least every two years
for women between the ages of 40 and 49, and annual mammograms for women over

The baldness drug Rogaine should be available within days, without a

It works-- at most-- for about one in four people.
It takes about six months-- at 30 dollars for a month's supply.

The F-D-A is warning parents not to overuse the prescription drug lindane
to fight head lice.
While the drug works well when used as directed-- apparently some parents
get overzealous with it.
Lindane can cause nerve damage, especially in babies.
The F-D-A says the treatment shouldn't be used at all unless other, less
risky, lice medicines fail to work.
The official alert follows a consumer group's effort to ban Lindane

miles an hour today, and most the game between the Cubs and Dodgers was played

The Cubs fell behind early but then roared back with Ryne Sandberg hitting a
two run homer to right center in the third.
The shot plates Kevin Foster and gets Chicago within one run at 3-to-2.
Then in the fourth the Cubs would blow the game wide open with seven runs.
Mark Grace would get it started with a two run single that chases home Foster

Down in Charlotte where things were much warmer today UNC-Charlotte named
Melvin Watkins the school's new head basketball coach.
Watkins who is a longtime assistant replaces Jeff Mullins, who retired
earlier this year.

Erma Bombeck is in good condition-- after undergoing kidney transplant
surgery in San Francisco yesterday.
The syndicated columnist's kidneys started failing her in 1990-- after
they were damaged by cancer-fighting medication.
Bombeck is 69.
She'd been on the waiting list for the transplant for some time.

The evidence continues to mount against an accused killer in Amherst County.

in the murders of two women last winter.
But prosecutors have been building a case against the Amherst County man.
Today, two inmates testified Burley admitted to them he killed Robin Burge
and Jacqueline Carter.
Burley's case has been sent on to the grand jury which could indict him next
