A small plane crashed this morning in Botetourt County at about 11:00.
The Roanoke Regional Airport says a single engine Cessna aircraft went down
about ten miles Northeast of the airport between Troutville and Buchanan on
Three people were on board-- there are unconfirmed reports that three
people are hurt, their conditions are unknown.
Airport officials say the plane was diverted to Roanoke because of low
fuel--but it never made it to the airport.
We'll have more on this later in the newscast.
Flags are flying at half-stalf today in Washington in memory of Commerce
Secretary Ron Brown.
The White House says searchers today identified the body of Brown at the site
of a plane crash in Croatia.
Brown's plane went down yesterday near the coastal city of Dubrovnik.
A search of the crash site has turned up 33 bodies.
The Pentagon notes that the flight manifest indicates the plane was carrying

Brown had been traveling with about a dozen top American executives
exploring business possibilities in the Balkans.
A partial bomb and diagrams on how to make bombs.
Federal law enforcement sources say agents have found those items in Ted
Kaczynski's Montana cabin.
They're trying to build a case against him in the Unabomber investigation.
Officials today plan to charge him with one count of manufacturing a bomb.

The Freemen militia group may be even more dangerous than previously

The F-B-I has learned the group has ties to a religious cult.
Known as the Chaney Family, the cult believes in polygamy and child
At least two children are known to be on the ranch.
The thought of children at risk is putting more pressure on the F-B-I to end
the standoff, now in its eleventh day.
The Texas parole board says the state has no choice but to release convicted
child molester Larry McQuay (muh-KWAY') from prison.
Parole officials say he has done his time.
McQuay's case has sparked community anger -- especially since McQuay has
said he will strike again and might kill this time.
McQuay now says he made the threat to draw attention to his plea
for castration at public expense.
He says he's still willing to have the procedure, but wants to rejoin
society, get married and lead a normal life.
The parole board says McQuay will likely be released on Monday.

and a jury rules in favor of a former spine surgeon in the first of several
malpractice suits to make it to court.

The man killed in a backhoe accident in Christiansburg yesterday has been
identified as 65 year- old Paul Henry Lephew of Salem.
Lephew was one of three men repairing the vehicle at an industrial machine
repair shop on Roanoke Street.
The backhoe rolled and crushed Lephew to death.
The Occupational Safety and Health Administration is investigating.
A Roanoke teen is in critical condition after being hit by a car.
The accident happened yesterday afternoon in the 600- block of Tazwell
Sixteen- year- old Charles Wright was attempting to cross the street when he
was struck by an oncoming vehicle.
Lieutenant R- A Bower of the Roanoke Police Department says the driver of
the car was not speeding-- and no charges have been filed.
Spine Surgeon Dr. Eric Korsh claims a victory in the first medical
malpractice suit to make its way to court.

Both sides speculate that the relationship between Brunson and Korsh may
have had some impact on the jury.
The two were friends, until a horse venture went under-- Korsh eventually
dropped a lawsuit against Brunson to recoup money-- before this suit was filed.
There was also this video that the defense hired a private investigator to
make-- in it, Brunson is seen working on his Copper Hill horse farm-- doing
just what he'd been saying he could no longer do.

East Coast residents were treated to a total lunar eclipse last night.
The moon had a red-orange glow as it passed into the earth's shadow.
This was the first total lunar eclipse on the Eastern seabord since December
One ideal place to watch the lunar eclipse would have been the Full Moon
Cafe in downtown Roanoke.
Every Wednesday, the cafe hosts open mic night for local bands, as well
as amateur singers.

The weather is one of the things you won't be able to ask your operator
Bell Atlantic-Virginia is telling its regular operators to stop telling
callers the time of day, area codes for different cities and other information.
Instead, people who dial "0" and ask for information will be referred to
"4-1-1" directory-assistance operators -- where the callers will be charged
for the service.
A company spokesman says Bell Atlantic has to cut its costs.

Lynchburg is definitely not alone in its pursuit of Frito Lay.
The world's largest snack food company is considering it as the site of its
new food processing plant.
But in an interview on W-I-N-C Radio in Winchester Wednesday, a Frito Lay
spokesperson confirmed there are two other communities in the running.
The Dallas based company says it's taking its time choosing between
Lynchburg, the Winchester area, and Martinsburg, West Virginia.
The comment was made to apparently end speculation that Frito Lay had bought
land in West Virginia.
A Roanoke hotel has ended its affiliation with a national reservation agent.
The Patrick Henry Hotel says it will NOT to renew its three year contract
with the Radisson chain.
The change took effect earlier this week.
The hotel's general manager says the move will not impact operations there.
The Patrick Henry employs about 100 people.
In the end, the hotel says the number of customers Radisson brought in
didn't justify the cost of the affiliation.
The Patrick Henry Hotel has signed a contract though, with another
