There's no word yet on what caused a fatal accident in Franklin County this
morning.
State Police say 30- year- old Ronnie Lee Markham of Vinton was pronounced
dead at the scene of the accident around five o'clock.
According to Trooper J-K Johnson, Markham's 19-87 Saab four door was heading
northbound on route 2-20, just south of route 6-19, when it ran off the right
side of the road and overturned.
The trooper's report says it doesn't appear that Markham was wearing a
seatbelt.

An accident involving a motorcycle and a pick-up truck sent one man to the
hospital.
25-year-old Eddie Lee Clements, of Roanoke County, is in stable condition at
Roanoke Memorial Hospital.

Police say Clements' motorcycle struck a pick-up truck driven by 47-year-old
Roy T. Danson.
Danson was attempting to make a left turn when the accident occurred.
Danson was not injured.
The accident happened around 2:30 on Dale Avenue in Roanoke.
It is still under investigation and charges are pending.

A bucket of ashes appears to be the cause of a house fire in Roanoke County
that left a family homeless.
The fire investigator says a bucket of ashes from the fireplace was placed
on a cardboard box in the basement of the Poplar Drive home.

And apparently heat from the ashes ignited the box.
They say the house received 25-thousand dollars of heat and smoke damage to
the basement.
The owner received minor injuries when he tried to put out the fire.
The family will not be able to return to the house until damaged electrical
wiring is repaired.
The fire marshal wants to warn everyone that ashes stored in a metal bucket
can stay hot up to 14 days.

The owl has risen from the ashes.
A little more than a year a go The Owl Hollow Horse Farm burned to the
ground.
It's still a work in progress, but slowly the nationally renowned horse farm
is getting back on its hooves.

The McBrooms say fire accelerated changes they were already planning to
make.

Their house was also destroyed in the fire.
Now they're living in an apartment above the barn, but for 14 months this
was their home and business office.
To say the least, the 33 foot travel trailer was crowded with two children,
dogs and a cat.

Soon there will be plenty of room for shoes in the middle of the
floor--their new house will be finished by August.
The McBrooms say since the fire they've learned to appreciate everything
life has to offer.

His brother Swede McBroom lost a woodworking business in blaze just two
months after the horse farm went up in smoke.

Swede is also a musician.
And he lost instruments and a music collection he acquired while in Europe.
It's been a year since the fire and now Swede says his business looks
promising once again.

More than three-thousand unionized workers from Kroger supermarkets in our
area reconsidered their strike vote from last Sunday and decided to stay on the
job.
Many of the younger members of the rank and file felt a dollar ten wage
increase over a five year period was insufficient.
Botetourt County signed a deal made in steel this week.
On Tuesday it announced that the Meadville Forging Company of Pennsylvania
will build a new plant in Buchanan that will hire 75 people over the next two
and a half years.
The New River Valley Economic Development Alliance has hired one of its
founders as its new executive director.
Officials selected Dublin businessman Hiawatha Nicely from a pool of 70
applicants.
Roanoke's Patrick Henry Hotel is no longer in the Radisson chain.
The hotel's general manager said the reservation arrangement was not cost
effective.
Some high marks for Shenandoah Life, which has more than 200 employees in
Roanoke.
An independent research firm says the insurer received a 100-percent
satisfaction rating from its business customers.
A Mecklenburg County department store chain is growing.
Peebles Incorporated says it plans to merge with Carlisle Retailers, which
operates seven stores in Ohio and Pennsylvania.
Checking the Dow Jones Industrial Average for the week, it rose 96-points,
closing at 5682-point-88.
