That's according to the United Network for Organ Sharing, based in Richmond.
About 20-thousand organ transplants were performed around the country last year.
The national waiting list last year reached a record 43-thousand.
Currently there are more than 45-thousand-600 patients on the waiting list.
A new name is added to the list every 18 minutes.

Now, though, a study suggests a LOW rate may also indicate trouble-- in the form of an increased risk of heart attack.
The researchers from the Cleveland Clinic Foundation say by considering the stress-test heart-rate, ALONG WITH the electrocardiogram and blood pressure, physicians should get a better picture of a patient's risk.
The study is reported in the journal "Circulation."

The 100th running of the BOston Marathon took place today under ideal conditions.

The largest field in the history of the Marathon ran side by side at the start of today's race.
But by the end, the story was much the same, especially on the women's side where Germany's Uta Pippig became the first woman in history to win three straight marathons.
American Jean Driscoll won the women's wheelchair division for the seventh straight year.
On the men's side, Switzerland's Hans Fry captured the top prize in the men's wheelchair division.
While the overall winner was Kenya's Moses Tanui. Last year's runnerup in the marathon won today's event in a time of 2 hour, nine minutes and 16 seconds.
The 30 year old Tanui is also the reigning world champions in the half marathon.

And as expected the NBA has taken action against Magic Johnson for bumping a referee yesterday.
