The American With Disabilities Act and retailers' drive to attract a wider customer base have brought about changes in the shopping environment.
Making store entrances curb-less is one way merchants make their goods more accessible. ((KNIGHT: EVEN IN GROCERY STORES YOU WALK IN AND SEE THE MOTORIZED SCOOTERS WITH THE BASKETS ON THEM. THE ISLES ARE WIDER, THE DOORS ARE WIDER. THERE ARE AUTOMATIC OPENING DOORS.))
Most of these changes have occurred in the last 20 years.
Susan Knight says increased awareness has helped, but she says more improvements still needs to be made if retailers plan to cash in on this growing market.
