This is Britain's first Nazi war crimes case.
It's taken two and a half years, but the trial of Richard Allen Davis is
about to get underway in Northern California.
Davis is accused of kidnapping and killing 12- year- old Polly Klaas in

Six Virginia Military Institute cadets have been suspended for assaulting a
freshman classmate who had been excused from the Rat Line because of medical

V-M-I officials say the 15 cadets held down the cadet, tried to shave his

The cadet partly dislocated his shoulder in the incident.

A Tazewell businessman has become the second person to seek the Republican
nomination to challenge Congressman Rick Boucher in the November election.

seeking the Republican nod to oppose Boucher, a 14-year incumbent.
A constitutional amendment to make it harder to raise taxes failed last

Vets say she is in good hands.
The Lucas's were selected from 29 applicants wanting the dog.

The Dallas Mavericks may have a new owner.
A Dallas radio station is reporting that the team was sold to a group
headed by Ross Perot Junior.
Perot is the son of Texas billionaire Ross Perot.
The station says the deal was closed last night with Mavericks owner Don
A former University of Virginia football player has been charged with
slamming another student's head through a car window.
Twenty-year-old Charles Preston was arrested Sunday by university police and
charged with assault and battery.
He also faces a charge of destruction of property.
The other student, Matthew Kase, was treated for minor injuries.
Preston was dropped from the squad earlier this year when he said he planned
to transfer to another school.
A former Virginia State basketball player died during a pickup basketball
game in Roanoke.
Officials at the school near Petersburg say 26-year-old Martin Carey died of
heart failure during yesterday's game.
He was known as "Blade" during his two seasons on the Trojans basketball
He was a native of Amelia and graduated from Virginia State in 1993.
The 100th running of the Boston Marathon produced few surprises and a number
of repeat winners yesterday.

But by the end, a familiar face was mugging for the camera in the women's

This is the third straight year a Kenyan has won the men's marathon.
In one sad footnote to the race, a 61- year- old Swedish man died of an
apparent heart attack after finishing the event.

An autopsy is planned.
American Electric Power and First American Bank are keeping Roanoke's
largest annual road race up and running.
A-E-P and First American are the new sponsors of the Festival Classic Run.
Up until this year, the five and 10- K races that took place during
Roanoke's Festival in the Park had been sponsored by First Union and Dominion
A-E-P and First American made the announcement flanked by runners from
Northside High School.
Northside is challenging other schools in the region to see who will have
the most runners in this year's run.
