Pittsylvania County health officials say they have a third confirmed case of rabies in a wild animal this year.
They say a rabid raccoon was picked up a mile from Chatham earlier this month.
The raccoon had gotten in a fight with two dogs -- which officials say is unusual behavior for one of the generally nocturnal animals.
Earlier this year -- a skunk near Chatham and a racoon in the Java area tested positive for rabies.

The Federal Government is trying to determine if 23-million Ford cars, vans and light trucks are fire hazards.

Defective ignition switches are blamed for more than 800 fires in North America.
Some owners have reported the fires start in the steering column. In some cases, in vehicles that were parked with the engines off.
Ford has already recalled a quarter of a million vehicles in Canada, but no action has been planned for America.
The company says it's cooperating with the investigation.
In the meantime, officials say if your ignition sparks, smells or smokes, you should get it fixed.

That's what a News-7/Roanoke Times poll shows.
Warner is leading among likely Republican voters in the June primary but not by much.

If the vote were held today, the survey says Warner would get less than half the vote, but still beat challenger Jim Miller.
Seventeen percent of the voters surveyed said they had not made up their minds.
But among GOP voters, just 39 percent have a favorable opinion of Virginia's senior senator; and 25 percent have an UNfavorable view.
John Warner is maintaining a comfortable lead over his likely Democratic opponent, Mark Warner, 56 percent to 24 percent.
