That's the question some are raising after a high speed chase ends in an
accident. The suspects car hit another killing a Vinton Family. Tonight we'll
hear from Roanoke County police.
Here's a story of a state trooper going above and beyound the call of duty
-and it's caught on tape.
A trooper is hit by a pickup truck hen he gets in his car and chases the
suspect. We'll have the story.
Plus some cooler temperatures on the way. Robin with the forecast.

Roanoke County's chief of police says his officers are grieving over the
death of the Vinton family killed in Sunday's police pursuit.
But he's defending the officers actions.

Roanoke County's police chief says his officers did the right thing when
they pursued 21-year-old Scott Carlton Allman.

The 12 mile chase started in the 5000 block of Franklin Road and ended on
the corner of Williamson and Plantation Roads.
Sunday afternoon around 1:40 an officer noticed a suspicious vehicle with
tinted windows in a parking lot.
When the officer approached the car the chase was on.
They traveled on 220 to 581 North at speeds sometimes reaching as high as 90
miles per hour.
After numerous twists and turns the chase continued west on Plantation Road.
Moments before the fatal collision police say the officer called off the
pursuit but the suspect continued.

Police say the suspect vehicle went through the intersection at Williamson
road and rammed a black Monte Carlo ejecting 36-year-old Lori Mason from the
She died in the street.
The driver of the Monte Carlo, 34-year-old Thomas Faucher was also killed.
And six- week- old Joleen Faucher was thrown from the car to the side of
road-- she died at the hospital.
TODAY'S COURT STUFF
The suspect, Scott Carlton Allman, was uninjured.
He was charged with three counts of involuntary manslaughter.
Allman's wife was also in the car with him.
She had to be cut out of the wreck and airlifted to a local hospital.
The chief says the incident has been hard on his department.

The chief says their pursuit policy is a good one-- but they will review it
to see if changes need to be made.

A pickup truck hit a state trooper in South Carolina- The whole thing was
caught on videotape.
The trooper's standing alongside a car when a pickup truck strikes him.
The police car dashboard camera caught the accident.
Then the trooper manages to get in the car and chase the suspect.
The 43 year old was arrested for driving under the influence and leaving the
scene of an accident.
The trooper was then taken to the hospital- treated and released.
A head-on crash in Lynchburg tonight sent three people to the hospital and
snarled traffic for about an hour.
Three vehicles were involved in the accident at the intersection of
Rivermont and Bedford Avenues. It happened around 7:15.
This Pontiac convertible and a Ford pickup truck collided head-on, then
crashed into another car.
Three people were taken to Lynchburg General Hospital. Non of the injuries
Police are still investigating the crash.
Two children were slightly injured today when someone fired a B-B gun
through the window of a school bus.
It happened at the intersection of (CHINK-apin) Chinquapin Trail and
Southview in Christiansburg.
The bus was taking students home from Falling Branch Elementary School when
the shots were fired just before four.
Students told police a thin, blond haired teenager shot at the bus, then
left in a taxi.
One student had an injured finger, the other- a slight head abrasion.
Police are still searching for the suspect.

Divers were called in tonight to search for a Henry County man believed
Police say 43 year old Danny McMillan of Collinsville hasn't been seen since
Authorities this morning noticed McMillan's red Ford truck parked near the
A helicopter searched the area this afternoon.
Divers were called in after a dog tracked McMillan's scent to the edge of
Authorities do NOT suspect foul play.
Diver's suspended their search around dusk. They'll resume in the morning.
Help is on the way for authorities battling drug dealers and other criminals
in a small Henry County community.
State Police Superintendent Wayne Huggins and Secretary of Public Safety
Jerry Kilgore flew to Henry County today.
Last week- Sheriff Frank Cassell wrote to both asking for help after an
article appeared in U-S News and World Report magazine.
The report described the Sandy Level community's problem with crack cocaine
and other crime.
The three met behind closed doors for nearly two hours.
State assistance is on the way, but they declined to say in what form.
They're worried that exposing their strategy might give criminals the upper

With the Roanoke City Council election coming up in a couple of weeks--
members are re- evaluating how they should be elected.
Back in the spotlight is the modified ward system-- which would allow
some members to be elected by district.
Tonight, council hosted a sometimes volatile public hearing on the issue.

That was the sentiment of many who spoke before Roanoke City Council
regarding the current at- large electoral system.
Several citizens believe the much- debated modified ward system would make
council members more accountable to all districts-- not just their own.

The lone opponent who spoke at the hearing says Roanoke faces more crucial
issues, like providing adequate housing-- and dividing the city into wards

Meanwhile, residents continued demanding council allow citizens to vote on
the issue-- but the city attorney explained there are many steps in the

Council ended up approving a motion to form a task force of neighborhood
organizations to come up with a plan for a modified ward system-- with the idea
that it will eventually be placed on the ballot as a referendum.

Bell Atlantic and Nynex agreed to merge over the weekend.

The merger will serve 13 states from Maine to West Virginia and would create
the nation's second largest phone company, second only to A-T and T.
Some Mitsubishi workers say they were sexually harrassed but today other
workers rallied in favor of the company.

She is remembered as a woman who laughed at life- and saw the humor in
Erma Bombeck died today from complications following a liver transplant.
Bombeck's column appeared in about 700 newspapers. She also wrote several
best selling books.
Cartoonist and friend Bill Keane says it is a loss for all of America, but
he says up in heaven there's a lot of laughter starting.
Erma Bombeck was 69.

is out of prison.
Tracy Lippard was released after serving seven months.
She was convicted in November of 1994 of two counts of attempted second
