Roanoke County police say a dispatcher's mix-up was a factor in a high-speed chase that ended in a crash that killed a couple and their infant daughter.
Officials say the officer pursuing 21-year-old Scott Allman was initially told the suspect was driving a stolen car.
Allman was actually driving his own car.
Police say Allman crashed into another moments after the officer gave up his pursuit.

A leaked internal memo at R-J Reynolds indicates company officers were aware of the benefits of targeting tobacco advertising towards children.

((
For years tobacco companies have argued their cigarette ads don't influence kids who start smoking. more documents from their own researchers surfaced, suggesting that's simply not true.
The latest leak comes from inside the R.J. Reynolds Tobacco Co....which set out in a 1974 memo to discover why rival Philip Morris' Marlboro brand was doing so well with teenagers.
Advertising was a "psychological support" youngsters needed when selecting their first brand, the memo concluded....and that choice was made "...based on product characteristics or advertising and promotion communication."
That is not, however, what R.J. Reynolds has been preaching to the public.
As recently as January it told the Food and Drug Administration "There is no evidence that cigarette advertising induces minors of other non smokers to begin smoking."
Critics called the memo another tobacco bombshell. MATTHEW MEYERS: "ONE BY ONE THE TOBACCO INDUSTRY MYTHS ARE BEING EXPLODED. THIS ONE EXPLODES ONE OF THE MOST IMPORTANT ONES - THAT THEY DON'T BELIEVE THAT CHILDREN ARE INFLUENCED BY ADVERTISING." (9)
Even R.J. Reynolds confessed in the memo it was impressed with the Marlboro Man ads.
And today's Marlboro billboards still reflect what its rival cigarette makers admired...quote..."a manly, tough, user image."
BILL NOVELLI, CAMPAIGN FOR TOBACCO FREE KIDS :"EIGHTY-FIVE PERCENT OF ALL THE CHILDREN WHO SMOKE, SMOKE ONE OF THE THREE MOST ADVERTISED BRANDS. THIS IS NOT A COINCIDENCE. THEY SMOKE THOSE BRANDS BECAUSE THEY ARE SUSEPTABLE TO ADVERTISING."
R.J. Reynolds responded today that the memo was a "judgement call" by a researcher studying brand selection. It repeated that "advertising does not induce teenagers to smoke"
Contradictions like these are more than an embarassment. They could be critical to an ongoing government study of whether cigarettes are nothing more than a nicotine delivery system. If the government decides that is the case, then the federal regulation of cigarettes may be closer than ever.
