At the Virginia Military Institute a 10-year-old Lexington boy was accidentally shot and killed by his shooting coach.

According to V-M-I officials, firing coach Jim Thorp, had just shown 10- year- old John Pickral and his mother a 380 calliber gun.
While returning the gun to storage it discharged going through Thorp's hand, striking Pickral in the chest.

One person was struck when gunshots rang out at a crowded park in Pittsylvania County tonight.

Police say around 40- people were there when Sylvester Pannell (PUH-NELL) was shot in the leg.
The shooting was apparently sparked by a fight.
When police arrived, they found a trail of blood but Pannell had already left.
They say someone had driven Pannell to the Gretna Rescue Squad crew hall.
A little later two Sheriff's Deputies located what appeared to be the bullet.

The Olympic flame torch relay has begun in Los Angeles.

A fingernail-sized flame symbolizing the spirit of the Olympics arrived from Greece today to ignite the torch.
The first torch was carried by Olympic decathlon champion Rafer Johnson.
Some ten-thousand runners will be carrying the torch for the next 84 days before it arrives in Atlanta July 19th for the start of the summer games.

High school teams from Virginia and surrounding states gathered in Richmond today.
They were competing in the third annual Electric Vehicle Grand Prix in Richmond.

The Floyd S. Kay Votechnical School out of Rockbridge County was among the teams.
The competition is for high school students who have converted gasoline powered cars to electric drive.
The cars were tested in acceleration, handling, range.
The day ended with a 35 lap race on the Richmond International Raceway.
Floyd S. Kay's car finished 10th.
