This afternoon at the Virginia Military Institute a 12- year- old boy was shot and killed and the V-M-I rifle coach was wounded.
The shootings occurred a little after one at V-M-I's rifle range.
The boy, from Lexington, was apparently shot in the chest.
Jim Thorp, V-M-I's rifle coach, was also shot.
He was transported to Stonewall Jackson Hospital.
His wound does NOT appear to be life threatening.
A spokesman from V-M-I says the shootings appear to be accidental.
The boy's name has not been released pending notification of next of kin.

A Henry County dispatcher may have overheard the fatal shot that killed a Collinsville man late last night.

The dispatcher was on the phone with someone who'd called to report a disturbance at their home on route 6-27, near Fieldale.
When authorities arrived they found 39- year- old Richard Andrew Dillon dead in the driveway.
Sheriff's officials say it appears two men at the residence were feuding with two other men in the driveway.

Two balconies at the Terrace View Apartment complex fell under the weight of nearly 40 students.
Sixteen people were injured.
