((Family members describe 10- year- old John Pickral as a boy full of life.
He loved sports... especially hunting.
But his life came to an abrupt halt after a gun accident at the Virginia
Military Institute Rifle Range.
Pickral was there to take a skeet shooting lesson from rifle coach Jim
Thorp... the man left holding the 3-80 caliber pistol.
Police say the bullet went through Thorp's hand and into the chest of the
4th grader.
Before the incident happened, conversation focused on the Salem Gun Show.

That's when Thorp took out the 3- 80... saying he had bought it at a gun
show.
He retracted the slide to see if there was a round in the chamber.
What Thorp didn't know was that the magazine was loaded.
As he tried to put the gun away, it went off.

Pickral was pronounced dead at Stonewall Jackson Hospital... the same place
where Thorp is recovering.
At this point no charges have been filed against the rifle instructor.
But V- M- I has turned the case over to the Lexington commonwealth's
attorney.

A Christiansburg Police officer shot a woman this morning following a
suicide call to 9-1-1.
Around 8-30, police responded to an apartment at the Old Farm Village.
According to a press release, a woman called 9-1-1 dispatchers and told them
she was considering committing suicide.
Officers arrived and heard a shot fired.
Stella Arcaro (ARE-CAR-ROW) then exited the apartment pointing a rifle at an
officer.
The officer fired, striking Arcaro in the leg.
She's in stable condition at Montgomery Regional Hospital.
Police have not said if Arcaro is the woman who made the call to 9-1-1.
The Christiansburg Police Department and State Police are investigating.

was shot in the leg.
The shooting was apparently sparked by a fight.
When police arrived, they found a trail of blood but Pannell had already

They say someone had driven Pannell to the Gretna Rescue Squad crew hall.
A little later two Sheriff's Deputies located what appeared to be the
bullet.

Officials from Blacksburg's Planning and Engineering Department have
inspected an apartment building where second- and third-floor balconies
collapsed yesterday morning.

The two balconies at the Terrace View Apartment complex fell under the
weight of nearly 40 students.
Three people remain hospitalized.
Thirteen others were treated at local hospitals for injuries ranging from
cuts and broken bones to emotional trauma.
The apartment manager says the rental policy states only 10 people should be
on the balcony at one time.
Town Manager Ron Secrist says he expects to get the results of the
inspection early this week.

The Hill City has emerged the winner of the Frito Lay Sweepstakes.
Lynchburg leaders have confirmed that the world's largest snack company will
put its newest plant there, possibly creating as many as a thousand jobs.
Norfolk Southern says it had a strong first quarter in spite of bad weather
and a strike at General Motors.
The rail giant is one of the region's largest employers.
Valley Bank says its first year in business was a good one.
The Roanoke bank posted a loss for fiscal 1995, but it says it expected it
because of costs associated with starting up a new operation.
Dublin businessman Hiawatha Nicely has backed out of his new job as director
of the New River Valley Economic Development Alliance.
Nicely was unable to adjust his business and personal activities to devote
full attention to the Alliance.
An attorney with Quibell says the Roanoke soft drink maker has halted
production for the past few weeks because of a dispute with a bottle supplier.
The company expects to be up and running again next month.

The city of Lynchburg has reached a settlement with Trigon Blue Cross Blue
Shield over allegations of fraud.
The city claimed it had been defrauded of up to one MILLION dollars
because Trigon did not pass on discounts it negotiated with hospitals for city
employees' health care.
Neither Trigon nor the city would disclose terms of the settlement.
The case was to come to trial next month.

But Sterling Marlin took the lead with less than 25 laps to go to win the
race at Talladega.

Ernie Irvan running with a patched up engine managed to lead the race after
passing Dale Earnhardt.
But Sterling Marlin had the fastest car on the track he worked his way
through traffic to take the point about 60 laps into the race.
The third caution of the day came out when Bill Elliott's car gets airborne
and slams down in the grass on all four wheels on lap 79 of the race.
Elliott remained in the car until a crew was able to cut him out. He was taken
to an Alabama hospital with a dislocated hip.
Ward Burton led for a lap but Terry Labonte was the leader at the half way
mark after holding off Earnhardt and Terry Labonte. After they crossed the
line Earnhardt was the leader of the race.
Michael Waltrip in the Woods Brothers Citgo ford took the lead with 69 laps
to go.
Then the fourth caution of the day came out when several cars get involved
in a crash un turn one. Ricky Craven's car flips and gets airborne several
cars went under craven and he hit the fence in turn one. Craven was shaken up
but not seriously injured. 14 cars were involved including Jeff Gordon, Rusty
Wallace and Mark Martin.
