((Connecticut Representative Sam Gejdenson worried that a 30
pound weight gain..on top of his diabetes..constituted a serious health risk.
So he turned to the controversial appetite suppressant: dexfenfluramine.
In just one month, he lost half the extra weight....and has kept it off.
SAM GEJDENSON/CONNECTICUT: IT TAKES AWAY THE CRAVING. IT'S BASICALLY AS IF
THERE WERE A SWITCH IN YOUR BRAIN THAT SAID: I'M HUNGRY. I WANT FOOD. IT

Today, finally, dexfenfluramine is available to all Americans. For the
first time in 23 years, the FDA has okayed a new, prescription drug to fight
obesity...not only to lose weight..but to keep it off.
DR. WURTMAN: THIS WILL BE THE FIRST TIME THE GOVT HAS ALLOWED A
DRUG TO BE USED FOR MAINTENANCE OF WEIGHT LOSS.
Dexfenfluramine helps patients lose, on average, 10 to 15%
of their body weight. In trials, the drug has been taken for a year or more.
It appears to be non-addictive and, doctors say, even after a patient stops
taking the drug, the weight seems to stay off.
For over 10 years, the drug has been available in Europe. But critics
say, at high doses, dexfenfluramine can be toxic. Critics say, it can cause
nerve damage.
DR. MARK MOLLIVER/JOHNS HOPKINS UNIVERSITY: ONCE A DRUG IS

VO-NAT
SUPER=03-Los Angeles, CA;
Well, today Chelsey Thomas's surgery is complete.
Doctors have been removing muscles and nerves from her legs and
transplanting them to her face.
It will take about six weeks to see if the nerve damage is corrected so
she can finally show off her smile.
