The Henry County Department of Social Services was already familiar with Vivian Thomas when her infant child died in a house fire.

Prosecutors say Thomas had left her children alone at least 30- minutes before her house caught fire in February.
The blaze killed her six-month old daughter and seriously injured her two other young children.
A state police agent testified the oven had been left on 500- degrees and caught the wall on fire.
Witnesses in court indicated this wasn't the first time Thomas had left her young children alone.
Thomas' brother testified his 31- year old sister has given birth to eleven children.
He says seven of her children had already been taken away by social workers before the fatal fire.

Halifax County authorities charged an elementary teacher and a school janitor with cocaine possession.
The teacher, 37-year old Dorothy Ferrell was arrested last night at a county park, along with the janitor, 40-year old Jerry Rags-dale.
Deputies answering a disturbance call say they spotted Ferrell, Ragsdale and a third person in a car, along with some crack and pipes used to smoke it.
No word on how much cocaine the deputies found.
School superintendent Kenneth Walker was unavailable for comment.

Overby had already confessed to killing his estranged wife, Sheila Ann Stafford, mutilating her body, and sexually assaulting her.

His lawyer says the jury selection process was more than Overby could stand.

Smoke blew across downtown Phoenix as 40-thousand acres burned in the Tonto National Forest.
Over 600 firefighters assisted by air-dropped water and fire-fighting chemcials made some headway as temperatures cooled a bit and the humidity rose. But in New Mexico, bone-dry air and high winds again threatened to send this fire ever closer to the Los Alamos nuclear research center.

The 61 year old, Massimino is best known for leading Villanova to an improbable national championship in 1985.

After weeks and weeks of hype, the 1996 Tour Dupont begins today in Wilmington, Delaware.
And for the first time in the history of the event, it will not begin with a Prologue time trial.

Instead the 12 hundred and 25 mile race will begin with a 51 mile race through the streets of Wilmington.
The spring begins at 5 this afternoon and ends at 6:45 after the riders have made 14 trips around the 3 point 7 mile course.
The Tour Dupont will be in the Roanoke Valley on Sunday and Monday of next week.

After exactly ten years of marriage, an Idaho man's decided to play the field.

But don't worry, Frank Lanum wasn't running around on his wife, Betty, he was just leaving her an anniversary message.
Lanum carved the words, "I Love You, B-J" in a field near their home.
He spent a month measuring and designing the message.
When the anniversary came around, Frank took Betty in a plane to show off his handiwork.
He said the only problem was he wrote the "J" backwards. (----------------)
