The couple was found dead in the front seat of their car outside a vacant store in the Sandy River community of Pittsylvania County.
27 year old Knova (KUH-NOVA) Day testified he was in the backseat when Carter pulled out a gun and began shooting.
According to testimony, the murders happened during a drug deal.
Day was also seriously injured in the attack.
He says Carter shot and stabbed him repeatedly.

But his lawyers will argue because those events happened AFTER rather than DURING the murder, it's not a capital offense warranting the death penalty.
They'll ask the jury to consider the lesser charges of first degree murder or manslaughter.

Ngor (Nohr) won a best supporting actor Oscar for his role as phtojournalist in 19-84 film "The Killing Fields."

Overby's trial is under way.
He's already pleaded guilty to defiling Sheila Ann Stafford's body and faces up to five years in prison.
He admits he wrote racial slurs on her body, mutilated her with a knife, and sexually assaulted her with objects such as jewelry and the handle of a plunger.
But his lawyers will argue because those events happened AFTER rather than DURING the murder, it's not a capital offense warranting the death penalty.
They'll ask the jury to consider the lesser charges of first degree murder or manslaughter.
