The numbers are impressive... 800 new jobs, a 400- thousand square foot
facility, and a 150 million dollar investment.
It's all the result of the Frito Lay company's decision to build a new plant

Lynchburg edged out five localities in three other states for the 150
million dollar plant.
Other cities offered bigger incentives, but Frito Lay says Governor George
Allen and Lynchburg's leaders helped make the difference.

officials say they've averaged double digit growth every year for the last five

And that's not hard to understand when you consider the world consumes ten
pounds of Frito Lay chips every second of the day. Keith?
Governor George Allen was on hand in Lynchburg today for the Frito Lay
Allen also took time to address the issue of the federal Goals 2000 money
Congress recently amended the federal budget bill to allow local school
districts to apply for the money directly.
But Allen says it still has to be okayed by the state board of education,
and that won't happen until more changes are made in the Goals curriculum.

Virginia and New Hampshire are the only two states to refuse to participate
in first year of the Goals 2000 program.
Virginia Lottery officials are in deep negotiations with a handful of other
states to form a new multi-state drawing -- similar to the 22- state Powerball
But Lottery director Penelope Kyle says since those negotiations for a new
game have gotten more serious, so have the overtures to Virginia from the
company that runs Powerball.
Virginia lawmakers are counting on revenue from some new multi- state
drawing by January first.
The Lottery board hopes to make an announcement this summer.

A driver of a motorcycle was killed today when his bike ran into a parked
car in southeast Roanoke.
The accident happened about three this afternoon, at the intersection of
Highland Avenue and 11th Street.
A witness said two bikers were driving down the street when the one on the
Red Suzuki lost control.
The victim is 19 year old Jesse Goins of Roanoke.
A quiet campaign will come to an end on Tuesday, when Roanoke voters decide
who will serve as mayor for the next four years.

The director of George Allen's embattled Department of Environmental Quality
is stepping down.
Peter Schmidt has headed DEQ since 1994.
He's seen the department through a difficult downsizing.
An independent state probe last year showed low morale levels among DEQ
employees -- many of whom felt they were being forced to compromise
environmental principles to help corporations.
Schmidt released a statement this afternoon, saying that it was hard to
leave the agency, but that it was time to go home to his family.
The stock market took a dive today.
The Dow lost almost 77 points, closing at 54 hundred 98.
NASDAQ plunged 21 points.
