(( As night fell over the remote swamp of Florida's Everglades, rescue workers called off their search, saying there were no signs of survivors.
Investigators say the wreckage remains in alligator and snake infested waters, complicating the task of recovering bodies.
What IS known is that the pilot of the DC-9, just minutes off the runway and flying over the desolate swamp, reported smoke in the cockpit and attempted turning back. the plane around.
Moments later, the aircraft disappeared from radar screens.
Airboats and helicopters converged on the remote crash site, hoping to find survivors.
Instead, Coast Guard pilots reported sighting nothing more than a charred expanse of swamp grass, while emergency rescue teams struggled to find a way into the area.
It was a lucky day for Atlanta businessman Terry Huckabee who missed the ill-fated flight, but for the families and friends of others, it would turn into a long night of waiting for devastating news.
The accident is the latest in a string of difficulties for the 3-year old budget airline, coming less than a year after fire destroyed a similar Value-Jet aircraft on an Atlanta runway.
That prompted the FAA to launch an inspection of the carrier's Pratt & Whitney engines.
