Search and rescue teams say it's slow going in the Florida Everglades.

Roosevelt Tillman had been the Navy's recruiting supervisor for Central and
Southwestern Virginia for the past eight months.

He was there visiting friends and family.
State Police say they are confident a NEW composite sketch may help them
find the killer of 25-year-old Alicia Showalter Reynolds.
The Baltimore doctoral student was abducted two months ago on a highway in
Culpeper County -- apparently by a man posing as a Good Samaritan.
Her body was found last week.

They say he made contact with numerous women who were driving on Route 29.

The sketch shows a square-faced man with reddish hair and a green plaid
A Roanoke man is being held without bond, following a fatal shooting over
25- year- old Eric Tyrone Waller is accused of shooting his sister's
boyfriend on Sunday afternoon.
Police say he walked into the home on Grayson Avenue, and shot 20- year- old
Marvin Williams in the face.
He later turned himself in.
This morning, a judge appointed the public defender's office to represent
Waller is facing charges of first- degree murder and use of a firearm in the
commission of murder.
A banker who chaired the Giles Industrial Development Authority for 25-years
pled guilty today to mis-application of bank funds.
Harold Chafin admitted in court he took thousands of dollars out of one
customer's account to cover another customer's debts.
At the time, he was branch manager of the National Bank of Blacksburg, then
transferred to the Blacksburg office and was stripped of his check- signing
Nevertheless he managed to get another bank officer to authorize a worthless
cashier's check to pay back the unwitting victim.
When that backfired, Chafin was fired.

Chafin's lawyer points out the 59-year old bank officer paid back the
bank... though Chafin concedes he didn't make good on the checks until he was
confronted by bank authorities.
Chafin will be sentenced in August.
The Salvation Army Shelter in Roanoke will be closed for the night following
a fire there this morning.
The blaze was confined to one room with eight beds, but other parts of the
building suffered smoke and water damage.
Officials say they're cleaning up the damage and calling in electricians to
check the wiring, and they hope to re- open tomorrow.
So far, they don't know what caused the fire.
Forty -two men spent the night at the shelter, and officials are hopeful
there will be room for them at the Rescue Mission tonight.

state audit into allegations he mis- used public funds.
A former employee wrote a letter accusing Caprara of using public resources
for political gain while he was director of the State Department of Housing and

has decided NOT to look into the allegations.

Caprara says the former employee, Phyllis Withers, may be working with his

Bateman's spokesman says that's not true.

The Philadelphia 76ers announced this afternoon that they are dumping head
coach John Lucas and his assistants.
The former University of Maryland star did a terrible job with a terrible
team this season.
The Sixers finished 18 and 64 this year, and during Lucas's two seasons as
head coach they had 42 wins and 122 losses.
Lucas is the sixth coach to lose his job since the regular season ended and
the first since Allan Bristow checked out of Charlotte.
Only one NBA game is on tap tonight in the playoffs.

junior Olympic team at the U.S. Olympic training facility in Lake Placid, New
Savard was the top player for the Roanoke Junior Express who helped bring
back a bronze medal to the Star City in the CanAm games back in February.
Kevin Duddey, one of his teammates, has qualified for a try out in the 16
year old age division as well.
Clay Earles, the Chairman of the board and Chief executive officer of the
Martinsville Speedway has picked up a big honor today.
The 82 year old racing pioneer, who has been promoting races for more than 49
years, is this year's recipient of the Bill France Award of Excellence.
Earles, who still feeds the menagerie of ducks that inhabit the pond beside
his half mile track on a daily basis, has overseen Martinsville expansion
efforts for the next century.
After building and opening the track as a dirt bull ring in 1947, Earles has
seen the track's capacity double in 8 years, going from 33 thousand seats to
its current capacity of 66 thousand.
Richmond International Raceway president Paul Sawyer, who is 79 is a
co-recipient of the honor along with Earles.

The Virginia Tech Hokies will not be going to the NCAA baseball tournament

The Hokies advanced in the winner's bracket of the Atlantic 10 tournament
this weekend, and needed only to beat U-Mass one out of two games this
afternoon to get the conference championship and an automatic berth in the

Fresh from last week's election, Roanoke city council is meeting tonight to
approve next year's budget.

But in addition to talking about money, council will also listen to people
at a public hearing.
They want to find out whether Roanoke residents want politics taken out of
the city council nominating process.
