(( Through 130 years and name changes, Southern Virginia College has always been a two year school for women.
This commencement marks the end of that tradition. ((BRENNEN O'NEILL/'96 GRADUATE: I'M GLAD IT'S NOT CLOSING. I'M GLAD IT'S STAYING OPEN, THE PLACE WILL STILL BE LIVING. THE CHANGE IS GOING TO BE HARD, BUT I THINK IT'S FOR THE BETTER.)) ((ERIKA GAY/'94 GRADUATE: THE TRADITION OF SOUTHER VIRGINIA COLLEGE AS WE KNOW IT WILL BE LOST. THE GROUP COMING IN HAS A LOT OF CHANGES AND PLANS.))
The change begins Monday.
That's when a group of Mormon businessmen take over the college.
They say the school will remain non-sectarian, but next year's freshmen class will include men. ((GLADE KNIGHT/NEW BOARD CHAIRMAN: WE WILL BE A FOUR YEAR COLLEGE AND WE WOULD ANTICIPATE TO FILL THE COLLEGE TO CAPACITY WHICH WOULD BE 350-400.)) ((DR ROGER BARRUS/ACADEMIC DEAN: THERE WILL ALSO BE A CODE OF STUDENT CONDUCT THAT WILL DEAL WITH ABSTINENCE FROM THOSE THINGS WHICH DON'T HELP IN LIFE SUCH AS ALCOHOL, TOBACCO AND SO ON.))
The new leaders say while the school has no religious affiliation, it will provide a much needed alternative for college students practicing the Mormon faith.
But for the final graduating class of Southern Virginia College for Women it's a bitter sweet day--one marking the beginning of their future and the end of a tradition they cherish.
