The Boeing 727 lost cabin pressure, on its way from New York to the
Caribbean, and was diverted to Norfolk International Airport.
The plane landed safely. Some of the 120 passengers on board had to be
treated for nose bleeds and ear problems from the rapid decompression.
The airline's president says the plane ran into trouble when it got to
cruising altitude and had to land.
Miami Air is a charter company that owns seven planes.

Investigators have not been able to remove the jet engines from the muck and
standing water, but a preliminary examination of the engines at the crash site
show no pre-crash damage.
Divers have removed small pieces of the jet...such as bundles of wires and
switches...that could yield clues why the jet went down Saturday shortly after
takeoff. The crew reported smoke in the cockpit before losing contact with the
Miami control tower.
The investigation continues amid reports this particular jet had to return
to the airport seven times in the last two years due to mechanical problems.
In April the FAA ordered that a bundle of electrical wiring on all
McDonnell Douglas DC-9s be rerouted to prevent the potential for fire. That
order takes effect Wednesday.
The airline itself is under fire... Transportation Department Inspector
General Mcry Schiavo has been investigating Valujet since February. She was
quoted in a recent Newsweek article as saying she wouldn't fly on the discount
airline.
MARY SCHIAVO, INSPECTOR GENERAL, U.S. DEPT. OF TRANSPORTATION "I'M SURPRISED

went easy on Valujet.

agency during Senate Commerce Committee hearings.
