In Salt Lake City, a standoff is underway between police and a 15- year- old
who hijacked a school bus,
and as the search continues for human remains in the Valujet crash in Florida,
some airport mishaps are reported in other parts of the country.

A Miami Air jet had to make an emergency landing in Norfolk this morning.
The Boeing 727 lost cabin pressure, on its way from New York to the
Caribbean, and was diverted to Norfolk International Airport.
The plane landed safely. Some of the 120 passengers on board had to be
treated for nose bleeds and ear problems from the rapid decompression.
The airline's president says the plane ran into trouble when it got to
cruising altitude and had to land.
Miami Air is a charter company that owns seven planes.
The company has passed all its Federal Aviation Adminstration inspections.

And a Northwest Airlines jet made an emergency landing at Hartsfield
International Airport in Atlanta last night.
A Northwest spokesperson says the plane was bound for Minneapolis when
its right engine failed.
The plane landed safely and no one was injured.

Meantime, at the site of Saturday's Value jet crash in the Florida
Everglades police divers are still searching for the cockpit voice recorder--
the second so-called "black box."
Yesterday, a diver literally stepped on the FIRST recorder, the flight data
recorder, during a search for human remains.

Investigators have not been able to remove the jet engines from the muck and
standing water, but a preliminary examination of the engines at the crash site
show no pre-crash damage.
Divers have removed small pieces of the jet...such as bundles of wires and
switches...that could yield clues why the jet went down Saturday shortly after
takeoff. The crew reported smoke in the cockpit before losing contact with the
Miami control tower.
The investigation continues amid reports this particular jet had to return
to the airport seven times in the last two years due to mechanical problems.
In April the FAA ordered that a bundle of electrical wiring on all
McDonnell Douglas DC-9s be rerouted to prevent the potential for fire. That
order takes effect Wednesday.

quoted in a recent Newsweek article as saying she wouldn't fly on the discount

The pilot of the ill-fated jet reportedly kept meticulous records of
problems she noticed on Valujet's fleet of older DC-9's. Candalyn Kubeck was
believed to be the first female captain of a commercial jet killed in a US
Lynchburg resident Roosevelt Tillman was on board ill-fated flight 5-92.
For the past eight months Tillman was the Navy recruitment supervisor for
Central and Southwestern Virginia.

Police in Salt Lake City are in a stand-off with a teenager after he
hijacked a loaded school bus.

Witnesses say the boy helped at least 15 children off of the bus before
The driver of the bus is in good condition at a local hospital.
A tornado has plowed through northern Bangladesh, leaving behind a trail of
death and destruction.
The Bangladeshi news agency says the storm killed more than 400 villagers.
As many as 33- thousand more were injured.
The news agency says thousands of homes were blown away.

Last night Simpson was the guest on a British talk show.

Los Angeles T-V station, K-C-B-S reports the Internal Revenue Service has

suspected of abducting and killing Alicia Showalter Reynolds.
The Baltimore doctoral student was abducted two months ago on a highway in
Culpeper County-- apparently by a man posing as a Good Samaritan.

The U-S is moving toward imposing trade sanctions against China.
This comes after a breakdown in talks between the two nations over a

The N-C-Double-A division three baseball tournament is coming to Salem
Memorial Stadium May 23 through the 28th, and Ferrum is hoping to make it to
the final eight.
Yesterday the Ferrum Panthers found out that they will be the second seed in
the tough South Regional later this week in Fayetteville, North Carolina.
Ferrum will open the double elimination tournament at noon on Thursday
against Atlanta's Emory University.
This is Ferrum's eighth trip to the N-C-Double-A's in the last nine years.
Also, the N-C-Double-A women's division three softball championships are in
Salem later this week, with games beginning on Thursday at the Moyer complex.
The Virginia Tech Hokies will not be going to the N-C-Double-A baseball
tournament afterall this season.
The Hokies advanced through the winner's bracket of the Atlantic 10
tournament this weekend, but lost two games to U-Mass yesterday 5-TO-2 and
8-TO-2 in the championship round.
Tech finishes the season with a 35 and 24 record.

During a practice session, take a look at the little dark brown spot just to
the right of the car as it whips around the corner at over 200 miles an hour.
That blur turned out to be a mother duck and her babies attempting to make it
across the track.
