It was a hung jury in Amherst County tonight.
That after more than six hours of deliberation.
Jurors had been trying to decide whether a Mexican migrant worker acted in
self-defense when he killed another man last winter.
27-year-old Juan Jose Ochoa admits he shot Jesus (HAY-SOOS) Mendoza during a
confrontation the night of February 19th.
The defense today tried to paint Mendoza as a violent and dangerous man, and
Ochoa says he feared for his life.
Prosecutors maintain Ochoa brought a gun to the trailer park that night
intending to kill Mendoza.
The victim was shot five times with an AK-47 assault rife.
A tanker truck overturned in the median on route 2220 in Franklin County
Though no one was injured, Keith Humphry reports a hazardous chemical
spilled and several hundred people were evacuated.

A new drug can slow the progression of multiple sclerosis-- but it may be
hard to come by.
Avonex won approval by the Food and Drug Administration-- but a competing
pharmaceutical company is asking a court to block its introduction, claiming it
would violate it's rights to a similar drug.
One patient group says Avonex is the only drug to slow the progression of
the central nervous system inflammatory disease.
Experts say the other drug--Betaseron-- is effective in slowing the rate of
flareups, but not the course of the disease.
Recently, Dr. Jack Kevorkian granted an interview-- he wanted to talk about
assisted suicide-- but only with "60-minutes" commentator Andy Rooney.
Kevorkian was acquitted Tuesday in his third assisted suicide trial--

The pole sitter for the upcoming Indianapolis 500 was killed today when he
crashed his backup car during a practice session at the Brickyard.
37 year old Scott Brayton

lost control of his car and hit the outside wall extremely hard, flush on the
left hand side of his Lola during a practice session.
The accident happened at 1:17 eastern time and Brayton was knocked
unconscious in the wreck
Preliminary findings suggest the right rear tire on the car was cut and
Brayton Helmet hit the wall upon impact.
Medical officials rushed Brayton to Methodist hospital, but he was pronounced
dead at 1:50 eastern time.
Track officials confirmed his death at 5 o'clock.
Brayton is the 40th driver to die at Indianapolis. He is survived by his wife
and two and a half year old daughter.
The 15 drivers who had already earned invitations into the Winston Select
all-star race qualified tonight at Charlotte in that the unique format that
makes the driver make three laps and a mandatory pit stop.

The Salem Avalanche returned home for the first of three game weekend set
with the first place Durham Bulls.

State police are now using a new device they say can stop high speed police
chases much more safely.
Officers say if a stop stick had been available during a high speed chase
from Bedford to Roanoke County last March, this crash may not have happened.
The device can be deployed in thirty seconds and is said to be safer than
any other method officers would use to stop a chase.
