Last month 10- year- old John Pickral died after an accidental shooting at
the school's rifle range.
The trigger was pulled by Jim Thorp, who told authorities he was trying to
put the gun away when the 3-80 caliber pistol went off.
In a prepared statement, Commonwealth's Attorney Gordon Saunders said the
incident did not warrant charges because it was not a willful act... and that
Thorp had no intention of endangering Pickral.

Rain today in Florida may interfere with the search for more wreckage from
ValuJet flight 5-92.
Crews are using sophisticated ground-mapping radar to help hunt for
critical parts of the crashed jetliner-- like the cockpit voice recorder.

We have a complete list of school closings because of the heat wave,
and we'll tell you how the heat took a swing at some softball fans at
yesterday's N-C-double-A tournament in Salem.
You would have never realized the scorching temperatures by the action on
the diamond at the N-C-Double-A Division Three Women's Softball Championship
The tournament took place all weekend at the Moyer Sports Complex in Salem,
despite the extreme heat.
As a precaution, each team was limited to playing two games per day.
Players were given a rest in between games and pumped full of water.
But heat took its toll on spectators.
Several fans collapsed Saturday.

Nick Holmes says play it safe and take these precautions during your outside
This is early in the season for such hot temperatures.
The normal high is 77-degrees. But yesterday's temperatures were almost
20-degrees more than the norm.
A few school systems have altered their schedules today due to the heat.
Craig County schools will close at 1:15.
In Danville, the high school and junior high dismissed students at noon.
The middle school will close at 12:40 and the elementary school will close
In Henry County, middle schools closed at 11:30, high schools closed at
11:45, and elementary schools will be closing at 12:30.
This schedule is also in effect tomorrow.
Students at Monroe County schools in West Virginia will be dismissed at 2:00.
In Nelson County, elementary schools at 12:25, and secondary schools will be
closing at 12:30.
THEY WILL HAVE A ONE BUS RUN.
Schools in Patrick County will close at 1:30.
Pittsylvania County schools will close today at 1:00.
Pulaski County schools will close two hours early.
And in Roanoke County -- students at Cave Spring Junior High, Fort Lewis
Elementary and Bent Mountain Elementary schools will be dismissed at one

There's word this afternoon of a deal between the United Nations and Iraq
over oil sales.
The country's ambassador to the U-N says Iraq will be allowed to sell oil
to buy food and medicine for its people.
That could mean bigger gas supplies and lower gas prices.
