There was more sobbing than screaming in Roanoke Circuit court this
morning... after a Roanoke man was sentenced to life in prison.
It's been more than two months since Michael Crump was convicted of killing
Eric "Nike" Jones.
And at the end of the trial Crump's relatives erupted in the courtroom.

Today's hearing lasted just 11 minutes... but before the sentence was handed
down, the convicted killer maintained his innocence.

Crump's sentence is suspended after 37 years.
Defense attorney Jim Cargill plans to appeal.
Also in court today -- the man accused of starting a fight with Roanoke
police after the vehicle he was riding in was pulled over.
Steven Leftwich had testified that he cooperated with the officers until
they began beating him.
But the court has sided with the officers.
Leftwich was sentenced to four years in prison and was fined four- thousand
But his jail term will be suspended after two years.
Leftwich will remain free on bond until his appeal is heard.
A C-S-X train derailed in Botetourt County this morning.
A couple of cars carrying grain ran off the tracks in the Oxbow section of
the county, between Eagle Rock and Buchanan.
No one was hurt, but the accident caused heavy damage to the track.
No word on the cause of the derailment.
In Montana, members of the anti- government Freemen could find themselves in
the dark soon, if they don't give up.

In the Forida Everglades today some 70 workers continue to search for debris
from ValuJet flight 5-92.

Leaders of the recovery operation now say they will wait another two days
to bring in heavy dredging equipment to be used in the crash crater.
Earlier this week divers found little wreckage in the crater, but federal
investigators say radar indicates there could be large, compacted pieces of
metal under the muck and water.
Alabama authorities have launched an investigation into an early morning
fire at a Nuclear power plant.
The blaze heavily damaged an UNUSED cooling tower.
Eight percent of the wooden tower was destroyed.
Plant officials say it has not been used since the 1980's and they add the

In Pulaski, a 10-year-old child is recuperating from Rocky Mountain Spotted
It is spread by dog ticks, and it can be fatal.
In recent years, only about 20 cases have been reported.
But health officials worry that all forms of tick-bourne illnesses could

Symptoms of Rocky Mountain Spotted Fever include:

-- light sensitivity
-- and a high fever.
Some pet owners in Montgomery County are being dogged by animal control
officers to license their pets.

More ammunition for anti-smoking activists today.
There are reports about a 1973 document in which R-J Reynolds secretly
concluded that skyrocketing Marlboro sales were due to extra nicotine added by
competitor Philip Morris.
The stories are running in "The Los Angeles Times" and "Wall Street
Critics claim the document proves that manufacturers manipulate nicotine
content to hook customers.
Reynolds, however, points out that between 1973 and 1988 Marlboro sales were
steady or up, even with less nicotine -- which means its earlier conclusion was
