Challenger Benjamin Netanyahu (net-an-YAH'-hoo ) is holding on to a slim

With all regular polling stations reporting, Netanyahu has 50-point-3

((
There is dancing in the streets, outside Benjamin Netanyahu's
party headquarters in Tel Aviv... For ardent peace process
opponents, and for the merely fed-up, it seems like the dawn of a
brand new day.
Just across town, at the square where Yitzhak Rabin was gunned down by a
Jewish extremist last November, it's more like the end of the world.
The assassin said then, his bullet was aimed at the peace process...
For many Israelis, it has finally found its mark.
So upset by the apparent election result is Rabin's widow Leah, that she's
said she'd considering packing her bags and leaving... a reflex of bitterness.
There is still no final result, but after projections and results went back
and forth through a night of gut-wrenching drama, it now looks all but certain
that Netanyahu has beaten Prime Minister Shimon Peres.
Today the apparent winner is taking it easy.
He ISn't claiming victory, he
says, until the official results are in.
That will take until tomorrow at the earliest, as absentee
ballots are counted, something over a hundred thousand of them, those of
soldiers - and of prisoners... somewhere among them, the ballot cast
by Rabin's jailed murderer.
As the debris of is cleared away, Israelis are starting
to wonder what comes next... All that's clear, is that this country has
drastically changed course.
With the winner not even officially declared, it's risky to make too many
predictions.
But the signs are Netanyahu will soon be forming a government, it's likely
to be made up of hardliners eager to get tough with the Arabs, and eager to
un-do much of what first Rabin andthe Peres have done in the last four years.
