Being beautiful and being thought of as beautiful has been very
important to Tonya Cama throughout her life.
Tonya would even say that it's
been an obsession....even more so now, because time marches on.
TONYA CAMA: I WANT TO MAINTAIN THE LOOKS THAT I HAVE BECAUSE OF THE
ATTENTION I GET BECAUSE OF THE LOOKS THAT I HAVE. PEOPLE MAY OR MAY NOT AGREE
WHEN YOU ARE USED TO GETTING ATTENTION ALL OF YOUR LIFE AS MANY BEAUTIFUL WOMEN
ARE MANY PRETTY WOMEN ARE MANY CUTE WOMEN ARE IT'S HARD TO START LOSING IT
But so far only tonya can see any flaws...even several plastic
surgeons have turned her down for surgery.
I TAKE IT AS A COMPLIMENT AND I COME HOME ELATED AND GOOD AND
THEN I LOOK I THE MIRROR AND SAY NO WHY DON'T THEY SEE THIS AND WHY DON'T
THEY SEE THAT YOU KNOW WHY DO I SEE IT.
Tonya's constant concern about her looks is more than an obsession,
it's a mental illness that doctors call body dysmorphic disorder or b.d.d.
...an even more simple term is imagined ugliness.
People with B-D-D are convinced they have an embarrasing physical
problem...no matter how often they are reassured by others that the
problem isn't there.
The hallmark of someone the B.D.D. is having plastic surgery over and over
to correct a problem that doesn't even exist.
Dr. Eric Hollander, a Psychiatrist at Mt. Sinai Hospital in New York
has been treating Tonya and others for B-D-D.
DR. ERIC HOLLANDER, PSYCHIATRIST, MT. SINAI MEDICAL CENTER, NEW YORK: THE POINT
IS THAT THIS IS AN OBSESSIVE PREOCCUPATION. THEY THINK
ABOUT IT 24 HOURS A DAY. IT CAUSES THEM A GREAT DEAL OF DISTRESS IT
SIGNIFICANTLY INTERFERS WITH THEIR FUNCTIONING AND IT CAN REALLY DISABLE THME
IN TERMS OF THER WORK LIFE AND HOME LIFE.
Surprisingly B.D.D. affects women and men equally and there are
varying degrees of severity including those who can't even leave their homes
because they believe they're too ugly to be seen in public. Researchers think
the disease is rooted in the discovery of something we rely on every day.
DR. HOLLANDER: FOR THOSE INDIVIDUALS THAT HAVE A PREDISPOSITION TO BECOMING
OBSESSED WITH THEIR APPEARANCE, THE INTRODUCTION OF THE MIRROR WAS SOMETHING
THAT TRIGGERED THIS. THERE HAS BEEN MORE CASES OVER THE LAST CENTURY PARTLY DUE
TO THE INTRODUCTION OF THE MIRROR.
Experts like Dr. Hollander believe that B.D.D. is related to another
psychiatric illness called obsessive compulsive disorder...and they treat them
the same way---with a combination of behavior therapy and
anti-depressants.
