A 13- year- old Roanoke girl drowned in Smith Mountain Lake.
It happened yesterday afternoon on the Bedford County side.

Wonder Starr Reed was swimming near the Beechwood West subdivison with some friends.
Reed apparently disappeared when the wake from a passing boat went over her head.
The girl's friends screamed for help when they lost sight of her.
A nearby resident pulled Reed from the lake, but she was unable to be revived by C-P-R.
Reed was taken to Bedford County Hospital and pronounced dead at around five o'clock.

The body of a Roanoke man who had been missing for more than a week was discovered on the bank of the Roanoke River in Montgomery County last night.
The sheriff's department says 66-year old Clarence Morgan was discovered by two rafters just after seven o'clock.
Authorities say there was no sign of any immediate trauma -- and they are awaiting autopsy results.
Morgan was reported missing May 22nd.

Lynchburg police officers are investigating a murder.
It happened around three- o'clock yesterday in the 600 block of second street.
Police say the victim, 21-year-old Tony Montez Murrell, suffered from at least one gunshot wound.
Witnesses say they heard several gunshots from a vehicle, then saw Murrell's body fall out of the car.
They told police the car then quickly drove away.

A high speed chase through Alleghany and Rockbridge Counties yesterday morning ended in a crash near Goshen.
The two men from West Virginia, 27-year-old James McKillip and 25-year-old Jason Pettry, are charged with stealing a vehicle, driving under the influence and attempting to elude police.
Officials say the chase began when the driver failed to pull over after clocked the car at 92- miles- per- hour.

State Police notified neighbors about the search.
Six hours later, a resident helped capture the men, when the suspects apparently asked for a ride at a house nearby.

A California congressman is siding with Southern Virginia College in its quest for accreditation.

Representative Howard McKeon of California says he'll ask the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools to reconsider its recent decision.
It denied accreditation to the newly Mormon-led college in Buena Vista.
The school lost its accredition because of financial problems, before the new owners took over.

The employment outlook for college graduates in Virginia is the best it's been in six years.
The good news for grads comes from the Virginia Employment Commission.
It says jobs most in demand are in computer-related specialties, engineering and technical areas...Those also are among the best-paying jobs.
Virginia's unemployment rate in March was three-point-eight percent -- the lowest since 1990.
