Reed was swimming near the Beechwood West subdivison with some friends.
She never resurfaced.
The girl's friends screamed for help when they lost sight of her.

She was unable to be revived by C-P-R.
Reed was taken to Bedford County Hospital and pronounced dead at around five o'clock.

The body of a Roanoke man who had been missing for more than a week was discovered near the Roanoke River in Montgomery County last night.
The sheriff's department says 66-year old Clarence Morgan was discovered by TWO rafters on the river just after seven o'clock last night.
Morgan's body was found on the riverbank underneath a bridge near the Roanoke River at the Montgomery-Roanoke County line.
Authorities say there was NO sign of immediate trauma--and they are awaiting autopsy results.
Morgan had been missing since May 22nd.

The muck is being scooped out and dropped into a sifter-- to find the remaining pieces of the Atlanta-bound DC-9 that went down and KILLED all 110 people aboard.
Workers found 10 oxygen canisters yesterday.
Florida officials say they are being sent to a laboratory for closer examination.
Up to 119 canisters were on the plane.
Two canister end caps were found with evidence of heat damage along with melted tires that were with the canisters.
Some aviation experts believe the fire would have produced gases so deadly that no one would have been alive when the plane crashed.
These experts were not involved in the federal investigation.

The arrest of actor Woody Harrelson for planting hemp seeds is drawing attention to the state's most controversial crop.

27-year-old James McKillip and 25-year-old Jason Pettry are charged with stealing a vehicle, driving under the influence and attempting to elude police.
State Police say the chase began when the car was clocked at 92- miles-an- hour.

A tracking dog helped locate the suspects.
State Police notified neighbors about the search.
Six hours later, a resident helped capture the men, when the suspects apparently asked for a ride at a house nearby.
The neighbors refused, then called police.
The men were captured without incident.

In Lynchburg, police are investigating a murder.
It happened around three- o'clock yesterday in the 600 block of second street.
Police say the victim, 21-year-old Tony Montez Murrell, suffered from at least one gunshot wound.
Witnesses say they heard several gunshots from a vehicle, then saw Murrell's body fall out of the car.
They told police they then saw the car quickly drive away.

The oxygen canisters, which contain a volatile mix of chemicals used to provide oxygen to passenger emergency masks, can create heat of up to 500 degrees when in use.
Federal officials say ValuJet was not authorized to transport full canisters, they are considered hazardous materials when transported as cargo.

The former host of "The New Family Feud" has reportedly committed suicide in California.
A Glendale hospital says Ray Combs died of respiratory failure.
A radio station quotes an unidentified friend who says the entertainer hanged himself at the hospital...and the police department confirmed Combs did commit suicide.

Combs, a standup comedian, hosted the t-v game show from 1988 to 1994.
More recently Combs was in the news after he was seriously injured in a July 1994 car accident on a highway north of Los Angeles.

Combs was 40 years old.

The prospect of riverboat gambling in the state prompted a resolution condemning that proposal as well as all forms of commercial and government sponsored gambling--plus the advertising aimed at encouraging it.
The 435 voting members of the assembly represent the largest Lutheran body in Virginia.

Among the winners last night were the shows "Rent"; "Bring in 'da Noise, Bring in 'da Funk"; and "The King and I." Each won four awards.
Best play went to "Master Class," which also received an award for its star Zoe Caldwell who walked away with the trophy for Best Actress in a play.
The award for best actress in a musical went to Donna Murphy for her role as the governess in "The King and I."
"Rent," a modern day musical based on the opera "La Boheme," (La bo-EM) was named best musical. Its creator, Jonathan Larson, died in January at the age of 35.
Nathan Lane received the Tony for best actor in a musical for starring in the revival of "A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum."

(( Thomas Gardner let his son bring a book by conversative radio commentator Rush Limbaugh to Montvale elementary school.
A teacher noticed what the fourth-grader was reading, took the book away and told the principal.
Gardner took his story to the airwaves and to federal court. He says the school system was wrong to censor his son's reading.
But another Bedford County resident disagrees.
She wrote: "If this child wants to read this book and the parents want to allow him to do so, he needs to do it at home or elsewhere. This kind of thing is what is wrong with our society today allowing young children to be exposed to things they are not ready for. I'm sure there are parents at that school who would not want their children exposed to this. I commend the Bedford County school board for taking a firm stand on this issue."
