The Likud team had come from way behind and just beaten the Dallas Cowboys.
That was the atmosphere in Jerusalem last night.
A superbowl victory.
A new team takes the trophy.
The tough old linesmen received resounding cheers--Ariel Sharon, the right wing war hero.
Itzhak Shamir, the ex prime minister.
But the crowd was there for the man of the hour. Benjamin Netanyahu, Bibi, King of Israel, to his supporters.
He let them down a bit, and he meant to.
There was none of the rabid right wing rhetoric of yesteryear.
No talk of a greater land of Israel. No call for the building of new settlements on the west bank.
It was all reconciliation and unity. "Peace begins at home", he said, "But I extend the hand of peace to all Arab leaders and to our Palestinian neighbors."
"The relationship with the United States is as solid as a rock", he said, while, in Washington, the Clinton administration was beginning to review its position. ((WARREN CHRISTOPHER/SECRETARY OF STATE: I THINK WE'LL HAVE TO REVISE OUR POLICY TO THE NEW SITUATION.))
He might not have given his fans everything they wanted, but he gave them quite enough. ((NETANYAHU SUPPORTER REACTION: WE FEEL THAT ISRAEL HAS BEEN SAVED BY THIS ELECTION)) ((NETANYAHU SUPPORTER REACTION: BECAUSE FINALLY WE HAVE A PRIME MINISTER WHO WILL TAKE CARE OF OUR SECURITY, WILL ALSO CONTINUE WITH THE PEACE PROCESS BUT SLOWLY AND CAREFULLY.))
In fact, the only unpopular word he uttered was the name Peres.
But he brought the crowd around, saying that Peres had made great contributions to the state.
Earlier, Peres called on Netanyahu to honor all the agreements made with tie Palgstinians.
And this morning, Netanyahu called on Israeli President Ezer Weizmann to discuss the kind of government he wants to form.
The world will be watching that very carefully over the next few days.
