For many, the crime has brought back chilling memories of another multiple- murder along the trail.
It was in the news 15 years ago this month.
Two hikers from Maine who were walking the trail together were killed near a shelter in Giles County.
Bob Mountford was shot to death-- Susan Ramsay was stabbed.
Randall Lee Smith of Pearisburg was charged with the murders, but a surprise plea-bargain spared him a life sentence.
Smith is now 42-- he's scheduled to walk out of prison in a few months.
