Good Evening, this is NEWS-7 at Five, I'm Jean Jadhon.
The tornado hit the Mount Airy community near Gretna at around 9-40, minutes
after it apparently made its way through Chatham.

Teresa Hamilton saw the tornado.
She joins us now from Danville.
Jean, officials from the National Weather Service say their radar coupled
with atmospheric conditions and our video have confirmed a tornado did indeed
touch down in Pittsylvania County this morning.

Wesley Jones is counting his blessings.
Two large trees were uprooted in his yard around 9:15 this morning-- just
inches from his home.
But the storm wasn't finished.
After weaving a path of destruction through Chatham, the tornado travelled
East toward Java before touching down in the community of Mount Airy.

Officials from the National Weather Service are in Pittsylvania County now
assessing damage to determine how strong the tornado was.

The National Weather Service says the tornado actually formed in the eastern
portion of HENRY County... near Axton.
At least two barns were destroyed... and a few roofs were blown off.
Residents say it happened so fast, there was no time to react.

It is confirmed that a tornado touched down yesterday afternoon in Franklin
The National Weather Service says it only lasted about five to ten seconds
and travelled less than 200 yards-- but it destroyed nearly everything in its
path including this newly built home.

To give you an idea of the force- people found siding, roofing and even a
few doors up to two miles away.
Winds from the tornado reached between 130 to 150 miles an hour.
No one was seriously hurt.

Police say the 13 year old is very troubled...and that there's NO evidence
the Charlotte fire was racially motivated.
Meanwhile, Attorneys General from 12 Southern States are hoping to help
crack down on church fires and other hate crimes.
Virginia's Attorney General Jim Gilmore is leading the effort.
He was elected head of the Southern Region of the Association of Attorney

The federal case against Tech football player Cornell Brown was officially
dismissed this afternoon.
The defensive lineman had been named as a defendant in the lawsuit filed
late last year by Christy Brzonkala.
She claimed Brown was also in the dorm room the night two OTHER athletes
Brzonkala withdrew the complaint against Brown, when she learned witnesses
said he was somewhere else at the time.
Brown's mother was in court today. She says it's been hard on the family.

The man accused of opening fire on fellow soldiers was in court today.

Sargent William (KROYT-zur) Kreutzer is charged with killing an officer and
wounding 18 soldiers last October.
A prosecution witness testified that KROYT-zur boasted of his plans the
night before the fatal sniper attack- but the witness says he did not take them

tried to avoid situations in which he might erupt in anger.

The government may be on the verge of doing something about the hidden
dangers in air bags.
U-S-A Today reports the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration is
considering a recommendation to equip vehicles with an on-off switch for
passenger-side air bags.
The action is apparently being triggered by the deaths of 21 children that
have been blamed on the bags.
Automakers are expected to resist the change.
