community of Mount Airy by our own News 7 crew-- which helped the National
Weather Service confirm the storm was indeed a tornado.

made its way through Chatham, around 9-15.
About 30- minutes later the tornado was still going strong.
After leaving a trail of destruction in Chatham, the twister made its way to
Java.
Minutes later our camera captured the tornado in Mount Airy.
Doris Strader was at home in Chatham when the storm hit-- a large Oak tree
in her front yard was one of the storm's casualties.

Officials with the National Weather Service say a tornado touched down here
in Burnt Chimney yesterday afternoon.
It apparently formed just above these trees with winds ranging from 130 to
150 miles per hour.
It destroyed this newly built home carrying the roof, the deck, and a few
doors up to two miles away.

Weather Service officials initially thought straight line winds... which are
more common in mountainous regions...may have hit the area.
But judging from the damage to this home, they now say it was a short, quick
tornado.
It lasted no more than ten seconds and travelled about 200 yards.
No one was living in this home at the time but the wreckage from it
highlights safety measures that could save a life.

no major problems have been reported anywhere along its banks.

The river reached its highest point in Altavista this afternoon, cresting at
18 feet, which is flood stage for that area.
A portion of the boat ramp and a parking lot at the Staunton Riverfront park
were swamped by the rising waters.
No other problems were reported in the town.
The river was "not" expected to reach flood stage farther down stream at the
towns of Brookneal and Randolph in Campbell County.

A woman was killed in a two- car crash in Lynchburg this afternoon.

It happened shortly after three o'clock on Candler's Mountain Road near the
entrance to River Ridge Mall.
A female passenger was killed when her vehicle collided with a van, pushing
the car into a tree.
Rescue crews tried to revive the woman at the scene, but she died at
Lynchburg General Hospital.
Police have not released any other information.
