A dramatic water rescue along the banks of the James River in Lynchburg.

I'm Len Besthoff, filling in for Ron Jones.
Susan Chaplin and a companion were enjoying a warm sunny afternoon tubing
along the James River when the unexpected happened.
They got caught, and nearly drowned, in the current of a hydraulic damn.
Our Lynchburg bureau photographer Ira Quillen was able to capture the
dangerous rescue on tape.

George Garland is something of a hero.
The Lynchburg man was fishing when he found a couple riding inner tubes
stuck in the current of a turbulent hydraulic dam along the James River.

Then Garland and another man decided to go in the river and try to save the

In the end, Garland and the other man got resuced along with the couple.
Because as Lynchburg Fire Commander Les Puckett will tell you, the churning,
powerful current from one of these hydraulic dams can quickly become too much

This rescue effort was a true example of joint cooperation between
Lynchburg got some big assistance from rescue crews in Monelison.

All four people plucked out of the water were taken to Lynchburg General
We have no word on their current condition.
But Commander Puckett says after Chaplin was rescued she was suffering from
hypothermia and exhaustion.
Roanoke has been named one of the top ten all america cities by the
National Civic League.
The Mill Mountain Star is being lit red, white, and blue in honor of the

Amercia designations than any other community in the nation.

Disclosure forms filed yesterday say southwest Virginia congressman Rick
Boucher traveled to Colorado for a conference on legislative issues at the
expense of the Tobacco Institute, a trade organization.
And the head of the congressional committee that holds tobacco hearings, Tom
Bliley, took trips to North Carolina paid for by the two largest cigarette
companies, R-J Reynolds and Philip Morris.
Boucher was unavailable for comment.
Bliley says he represents 10- thousand tobacco workers in Richmond and it's
not surprising he would meet with tobacco officials in North Carolina at their

Jazz singer Ella Fitzgerald has died at the age of 78.
Edie Magnus has more on the woman known for a range that went from deep
blues to brilliant, crystal-shattering highs.

She began her career as a teenager, winning a talent contest at the
Apollo Theatre in Harlem and attracting the attention of bandleader Chick
Webb, who hired her.
Fitzgerald was more than a band singer...she was able to sing the whole
arrangement and imitate in pitch and tone all the instruments in the band.
Thus came the title "the Queen of Scat."

Her instincts were right.

enrollment, and it just may happen this fall.

Expect longer lines at Virginia's college bookstores next year.
Virginia's colleges and universities are expecting an enrollment boom..
With community colleges included, Virginia is expected to welcome
55-hundred-90 additional full-time college students, bringing total
statewide enrollment to about 225-thousand in the fall.
All 15 four-year schools expect enrollment increases except Norfolk State
University -- which is anticipating a half-percent decline.
Optical Cable in Roanoke County is not resting on its laurels.
The company's stock is hot, it has landed some big contracts, and it sounds
like more good news is on the way.

The fiber optic cable company has scheduled what it calls a "major

The N-B-A's Milwaukee Bucks have hired a new head coach.

Former Boston Celtic coach Chris Ford is the new man for the Bucks. He
replaces Mike Dunleavy, who is still the Club's General manager.
Ford coached the Celtics from 1990 to 1995 and compiled a 222 and 118

The Bucks interviewed several candidates before giving Ford the job.

locations for outdoor adoptions.
Workers emptied the shelter in hopes of finding homes for many of the dogs
and cats left at the S-P-C-A.
