Susan Chaplin and a companion were enjoying a warm sunny afternoon tubing along the James River when the unexpected happened.
They got caught, and nearly drowned, in the current of a hydraulic damn.
Our Lynchburg bureau photographer Ira Quillen was able to capture the dangerous rescue on tape.

The Lynchburg man was fishing when he found a couple riding inner tubes stuck in the current of a turbulent hydraulic dam along the James River.

Because as Lynchburg Fire Commander Les Puckett will tell you, the churning, powerful current from one of these hydraulic dams can quickly become too much to handle.

Roanoke has been named one of the top ten all america cities by the National Civic League.
The Mill Mountain Star is being lit red, white, and blue in honor of the occasion.
The award ties Roanoke with Cleveland, Ohio as the city with more All- Amercia designations than any other community in the nation.
It was the fifth for the city.
The All-America City Award Program is the nation's oldest and most renowned community recognition award.

The appaliance store allowed the Roanoke Valley S-P-C-A to use several locations for outdoor adoptions.

Workers emptied the shelter in hopes of finding homes for many of the dogs and cats left at the S-P-C-A.
But you can't just step up to the table and walk away with a pet.
The adoption counselor interviews prospective pet owners and then new owners have to sign a contract.
