Citizens groups have been putting the heat on city officials to develop a
rental inspection program.
Roanoke city council has been working with landlords and citizens since
January.

That's when a house fire killed a woman and four of her grandchildren in
rental property in southeast Roanoke.
Council will vote on the latest proposal tomorrow afternoon.

Gone from the plan are mandatory yearly inspections and 75 dollar fines for
landlords who refuse to cooperate.
Landlords also won't have to submit lists of their property-- and property
inspections will only occur voluntarily.
Neighboring cities Lynchburg and Salem require rental properties to undergo

was roaming the streets near the Days Inn on Orange Avenue.
Officers chased the 100 pound bear for about 40 minutes before cornering him

The Danville Register and Bee has a new owner.
Media General will purchase it for 38 million dollars.
Reynolds Metals announced it will build an automotive wheel manufacturing
plant in Russell County.
It'll employ up to 125 people- -at first- -with the potential of employing

Rick Mast was having a strong run he worked his way into the top 10 by
passing Dale Earnhardt.
Ricky Rudd also had a strong car as he moves to the front with over 150
laps to go in the 200 lap race.
But Jeff Gordon, Who started on the pole, led 37 laps early in the race and
he was the leader at the halfway point.
Then South Boston's Ward Burton had engine trouble and he brings out th
third caution while he was running seventh.
Rusty Wallace was the leader with 80 laps to go but while leaving the
pits his car slowed forcing him to the garage area. Rusty finished 31-st.
And Dale Earnhardt had engine problems forcing his car out of the race
Earnhardt finished 32-nd.
But Gordon had the stuff today he passed Geoff Bodine to take the lead and
win the race, the fourth time he's won from the pole.
