The governors including George Allen say they will present a united attack
to solve the problem.

A military plane crash takes the life of a pilot- practicing for an air
The navy F-A-18 fighter was flying near St. Louis when it crashed.
The jet sheared off trees and power lines before hitting a detached garage
near Bethalto Illionis.
It missed a small brick house.
The pilot from McDonnell Douglas was doing acrobatic moves-
A witness says it appeared the plane stalled before going down.

Two mechanics reportedly filed false records on the oxygen canisters
aboard the doomed Valujet Flight.

The Miami Herald reports paperwork indicated, incorrectly, that the
canisters had the required safety caps before they were loaded into the cargo
Some speculate the canisters started a fire in the cargo hold that led to
the plane crash.
Families of disaster victims testified at a congressional hearing-
They're complaining that victims families get information from the media
instead of from government officialst.

Kessler says most people handling famlies were getting on the job training.
He says the only agency equipped to handle the needs of families in
distress is the Red Cross.
About 53 cattle are dead after a mix-up at a ranch in Botetourt County.
No one at the ranch realized the animals were apparently dropped off and
held in a pen.
It's unknown how long they were there.
Botetourt County Animal Control officials say they died from excessive heat
and a lack of water.
It happened at the Braeman ranch near Daleville.
The ranch belongs to the Woodhill Corporation which is in turn owned by T-D
But the cattle are said to belong to someone from out of town.
The loss is estimated at 10 thousand dollars.
A former Danville police officer wants a federal jury to help win her job
Cheryl Bartee is suing Police Chief Neal Morris, his assistant B-C Elliott
and two others for gender discrimination.
Bartee was fired last year for allegedly giving false information to a grand
According to court papers, Bartee was later reinstated by a grievance panel
but was fired again for allegedly violating department policy by taping a
conversation with another employee.
The tape was used as evidence in the grievance hearing in which Bartee was

Conference says the lawsuit and three others against the police department have
prompted him to form an organization to look into future allegations.

For the second time in two weeks
Doctor Jack Kevorkian's attended a suicide-- this time for a Virginia Woman.
58-year old Lona (LOH- nah) Jones of Chester suffered from a malignant brain
She had been corresponding with Kevorkian for months.
Yesterday she took her life in Pontiac, Michigan apparently after breathing
high levels of carbon monoxide.

Authorities today arrested the man they believe killed a Pittsylvania County
The victim was found dead the same day he was reported missing.
46-year old Aubrey Harris, Junior of Dry Fork was arrested this morning.
He's accused of shooting 37-year old Jesse Leroy Davis.
Davis was reported missing June third, the same day his body was discovered
along a rural road near Mount Cross.
A Federal Grand Jury in Roanoke indicted a woman this week for International

hiding out in Japan.

They married in Japan 19-82 and had two little girls, Mari and Ema.
But after 14 years Walter says his marriage fell apart as his wife got

The Women's Farm Bureau sponsored a program--the Farmers' Share-- across
various Food Lion stores in Virginia.
The Farm Bureau says for many farming today is not a profitable venture.
For example a chicken, Virginia's top agricultural commodity, may be sold
for 90 cent a pound, but farmers only see 46 cents of that amount.

Instead it was a black bear-
The 200-pound cub was having quite a good time keeping police on the run.
The not so little bear later pulled a disappearing act, and now authorities
are searching for the cub- so they can tranquilize it and return it to the

No one has seen mama bear and officials fear she may be close by.
Around 70 pint- sized equestrians were strutting their stuff at the Salem
Civic Center tonight.
It's one of the most popular events of the Roanoke Valley Horse Show-- the
Stick Horse Race.
Boys and girls, ages six and under donned their best riding outfits.
Some galloped on their own-- others needed a little help from Mom and Dad.
But in this contest, everyone is a winner.

Carl Lewis has qualified for the olympic games in Atlanta grabbing the third
and final spot in the long jump by an inch!
