extinguish the rash of church fires.

An F-18 military jet has crashed in a residential area in Illinois.
Word of the crash comes from police in Bethalto, a small city just across
the Mississippi River from St. Louis.
The mayor says the refurbished plane was being tested when it went down.
The F-18 is the Navy's premier strike fighter.
The single-seater is made by St. Louis-based McDonnell Douglas.
It happened just about an hour ago-- so far there's no word on injuries or

with the President.
The group is focusing on prosecuting arsonists, rebuilding churches and
preventing more fires.

A former officer is suing Chief Neal Morris and his Assistant B-C. Elliott
alleging gender discrimination.
Cheryl Bartee (Bar-TEE) was fired last year for allegedly giving false
information to a grand jury.
According to Bartee's lawsuit, she was later reinstated but was fired once
again for taping a conversation with another employee.
Bartee used the tape as evidence at the hearing in which she was reinstated.
Bartee's lawsuit and three others against the department has led the former
Vice President of the Southern Christian Leadership Conference to form an
Reverend Thomas Motley hopes his group can investigate allegations of
misconduct against the police department.
The alleged leader of a central Virginia mail theft ring has been indicted
by a federal grand jury.
19-year old Jeffrey Scott Wright of Lynchburg faces a single count of
possession of stolen mail.
Authorities say Wright and several juveniles stole hundreds of pieces of
mail, then forged and cashed the checks they found.
The juveniles have already been prosecuted on the state level.
Wright will be arraigned in federal court within the next week.

Ron Jones is in our newsroom with the latest.
Jean, this is the story of a man's family that vanished without a trace.
Walter Benda met his Japanese bride while attending Washington and Lee
University in 19-79.
They dated for a few years and then married.
After having two girls and a marriage of 14 years Benda's world fell apart.

Yoko Mizuno and Walter Benda became one.
Several years later Yoko gave birth to two children in the U-S-- Mari
(MAH-ree) and Ema.
Walter Benda says things were fine until his wife got involved with a cult

He's hoping this F-B-I warrant for International Parental Kidnapping will
give him a little more leverage with the Japanese government.
The Roanoke Area League of Women Voters is calling it quits.
Facing a lack of new leadership, the board has voted to disband the group
at the end of this month.

The latest attended suicide by Doctor Jack Kevorkian could have an impact on
Last night, in his presence, 58- year old (LOH-nah) Lona Jones inhaled
deadly levels of carbon monoxide.
It happened in Pontiac, Michigan, but Jones was from Chester, Virginia...
right outside of Richmond.
She suffered from a malignant brain tumor... and had apparently been
consulting with Kevorkian for some time.
That's opening the eyes of many Virginians.
But one ethics consultant says it shouldn't be TOO surprising.

suffering permanent brain injury.
