An F-18 military jet has crashed in a residential area in Illinois.
Word of the crash comes from police in Bethalto, a small city just across
the Mississippi River from St. Louis.
The mayor says the refurbished plane was being tested when it went down.
The F-18 is the Navy's premier strike fighter.
The single-seater is made by St. Louis-based McDonnell Douglas.
It happened just about an hour ago-- so far there's no word on injuries or
casualties.

alleging gender discrimination.
Cheryl Bartee (Bar-TEE) was fired last year for allegedly giving false
information to a grand jury.
According to Bartee's lawsuit, she was later reinstated but was fired once
again for taping a conversation with another employee.

The alleged leader of a central Virginia mail theft ring has been indicted
by a federal grand jury.
19-year old Jeffrey Scott Wright of Lynchburg faces a single count of
possession of stolen mail.
Authorities say Wright and several juveniles stole hundreds of pieces of
mail, then forged and cashed the checks they found.
The juveniles have already been prosecuted on the state level.
Wright will be arraigned in federal court within the next week.
