But tonight council members say there's no longer a need to have their own
officer.
The job has been eliminated, leading to the resignation of officer Jim
Phillips.

left by Phillips' absence.

that could have cleared convicted murderer (Yenz SIR-ing) Jens Soering.

girlfriend's parents, Derek and Nancy Haysom, in Bedford County.
Elizabeth Haysom pleaded guilty as an accessory and is serving a 90-year

defense attorneys about other suspects who could have committed the crimes.
But lead investigator Ricky Gardner says (SIR-ing) Soering's attorneys got
everything they were entitled to.
As far as Gardner is concerned, the real killers are already in jail.

complete with a distress signal and an injured crewman. two blackhawks bring
in soldiers who will rappell down to the rescue. but in a horrifying split
second, the rotors collide. the two helos and their cargo of human lives crash
to earth, spewing parts everywhere. six soldiers killed, nine critically
injured.
COL. SID ATKISSON: WE HAVE MANY FOLKS IN THE HOSPITAL WITH ORTHOPEDIC
INJURIES, MANY BROKEN BONES, BROKEN FRACTURES.
Even before the rotors stop spinning, soldiers rush to the wreckage,
ignoring the danger of an explosion or fire. A crewman is pulled from the
twisted metal and helped away.
Watching in slow motion, it looks to veteran helicopter pilot robert
ropelewski as though the blackhawk on the left committed the fatal error.
ROPELEWSKI: HE'S TRYING TO SLOW DOWN AND AS HE DOES AND HE'S PROBABLY
WATCHING THAT SPOT ON THE GROUND WHERE HE WANTS TO STOP, HE'S JUST DRIFTED A
LITTLE BIT TOO FAR TO THE RIGHT INTO THAT SECOND HELICOPTER ON THE RIGHT.
There were 28 soldiers aboard the two helos. only four of them were
killed, a morbid tribute to the crashworthiness of the blackhawk.
ROPELEWSKI: THE CABIN IS REINFORCED SO IT DOESN'T JUST COLLAPSE WHEN IT
HITS THE GROUND HARD, AND THE LANDING GEAR ARE BUILT TO ABSORB A LOT OF ENERGY.
IN A SITUATION LIKE THAT IT'S ALMOST MORE DANGEROUS TO BE OUTSIDE OF THE
HELICOPTER THAN IT IS TO BE INSIDE.
The other two who died were on the ground, and yes, that soldier who
posed as an injured crewmen on the nose of the mock up helicopter was one of
those who died.

Attorney General Janet Reno says anti-lesbian bias could have been a
motive in two murders near the Appalachian Trail.
The National Gay and Lesbian Task Force is concerned investigators did
not consider the possibility when two women were killed ealier this month in
the Shenandoah National Park.
Reno assured the activist group that all possible motives have been looked
at from the start.
The women were found June first with their throats slashed. Investigators
say the two had not been robbed.
More than one-hundred Park Service employees and F-B-I agents
are working jointly on the investigation.

In Wednesday night's 9-to-2 loss to the Toronto Blue Jays, Griffey broke a
small bone in his right wrist while fouling off this inside pitch from Erik
Hanson.
Last season he fractured the wrist on his other hand and missed 73 games,
fortunately this injury isn't as bad.

Just ask Joyce Savage. She just got a Christmas card this week from her
aunt and uncle.
It was a little late for the holiday, especially considering it was mailed
in 1942.
The local post master was just as surprised as Savage was.
She has no idea where the card came from.
Savage says she's not upset, she's just glad she got her Christmas card.
